Europe’s Christmas markets begin opening on November 6, 2026, with Vienna among the first major destinations to launch its festive season, followed by dozens of Christmas markets across Germany, the Czech Republic, Estonia and France later this month.
Vienna’s municipal authorities confirmed that 15 Christmas markets with a combined 814 stalls have been approved for the 2026 season, including 198 food and beverage stalls.

For travelers planning a European Christmas market break, opening dates vary considerably between destinations, and some of the continent’s most famous markets will not begin operating until late November.

Why November Is Becoming an Attractive Christmas Travel Period
For travelers who want Christmas atmosphere without travelling during the busiest holiday dates, November can offer an appealing alternative to the final weeks of December.
Early-season visits may provide greater flexibility when choosing accommodation, flights and restaurant reservations, although prices and crowd levels vary between destinations.
Travelers should also distinguish between a city’s general Christmas programme and the opening date of its main market.
A destination may already have illuminated streets, seasonal attractions or smaller festive stalls before its largest Christmas market begins operating.
Visitors should consult official tourism websites before making reservations, particularly when planning trips around a specific market or special event.
With Vienna opening several markets on November 6 and major destinations joining throughout the month, Europe’s Christmas travel season is entering its first important opening week.
