Italian PM resigns as coalition collapses

  1. This crisis is purely political. The Five Stars de facto withdrew from the majority, but there was still a large parliamentary majority.

  2. 5* MPs did their math well. They waited until now to drop out of the coalition, knowing too well that by the time new elections take place and a new parliament is installed, they will have earned the right to a life long pension

  3. Thanks a lot Conte.

I hope he received a check from Moscow because if he did this for vengeance (against Renzi who collapsed the government to put Draghi in charge) or to recoup 2-3% of votes, then I’ll spit in his face if I ever walk into him.

  4. Ah fuck, at least from the outside Draghi seemed like the best thing to happen to Italian politics in forever.

  5. one of the best government we had ruined by clowns…. they dont give a fuck about our country and people….

  6. Western Europe = Full of Russian puppet parties.

Democracy is always threatened by all sorts of dictators – see ancient Greece.

  7. Looks like some upper hand is crushing Pro-Ukraine leaders. After last G-7 summit weird things have happened in 5 of the G-7 . Macron uber scandal, Biden-Hunter Biden Icloud, Boris is gone, Now Draghi then eventhough he is not a president , he is very influential politician in Japan the ex-President was assasinated. Also yesterday EU made Lithuania to open to passage to Kaliningrad. I don’t think all of these can be a coincidence

  8. The classic Christian-Democrats, Socialists, Liberals and (though a bit more modern) Greens are far from perfect, but why do voters naively think that these populist parties (M5S in this case) are actually better? They’re much, much worse than the “boring” old parties.

  9. Can someone explain why he decided to resign as PM?

An Italian friend of mine told me that it is because a political party called 5 Stars (don’t know if the name is correct), they are Putin supporters and they want to lift sanctions, I do not know about this, or is it because of some other reason?

  10. We’ve been having a drought of Italian political crises since the 2021 Italian government crisis. It’s like the rain has finally come and the plants and animals are returning to restore balance to the world.

  11. Let’s hope the Di Maio split of 5-Stars will give a new parliamentary majority to a new Draghi government, because the polls in Italy show a worrying trend of the far-right and pro-Russia Eurosceptics FdI becoming the largest party in case of elections…

  12. For those more up to speed with Italian procedure, is it a symbolic resignation (i.e. he can form a new government next week with a different set of coalition partners), or a more permanent departure?

  13. Oh ffs Lasagna-bros…

Can you like for once hold a government in power for more than 1 year? Draghi looked actually like a nice prime minister for once…

    Oh well…

  14. I made this profile just to comment on this, I want to express a few things and I want people to know.

I’m a 24 year old dude from Italy, been here for all my life and I’ve been pretty active in the political life because I really thought that participation is key to bring change. And Italy needs change.

I am done. I AM DONE. After this shit, I’m done with everything political, I don’t wanna hear about it, I don’t wanna know anything about I’m done. I cannot find the words to express how disappointed, disgusted and frustrated I am in the people that are supposed to represent me.

I’m fully aware that in a democracy, voters elect politicians and so the decisions they take are a direct consequence of the voters’ choice. Now let me explain why im fucking done:

When for each 100 voters aged 18 to 24 there are 188 voters aged over 65 you know your vote doesn’t matter. Just the over 65, mind you. Young people are worthless, we are outnumbered by so much literally fucking noone wants to do what’s best for us (and so the future) because it would mean never reaching the top.

When the parliament is so detached from reality that it goes against the direct wishes of the people that elected them, you know there’s nothing else you can do to change the place you love. Gay marriage, legalised cannabis, assisted suicide. Each of these has at least 55/60% of the population that supports it. And yet, in 2022, none of these are a thing because the parliament refuses to legislate on it. If you were to put it through a referendum, they would all be done in a month.

When a party decides to use a petty thing in order to take down a president (who is being approved by 60% of the population)and government in the middle of a fucking war, drought, economic crisis and has the audacity to say that they did it for the people, you know there’s no hope of change.

I don’t fucking care anymore, they won. They managed to teach people that what they want doesn’t matter and that they are, by a degree, hostage of the parliament.

So when in 5 years time and the young people have left, the debt is sky rocketing and the pension system isnt sustainable anymore, I’m gonna fucking laugh.

They’ve managed to disenfranchise a whole fucking generation and they will be left to fend for themselves. Good luck

  15. Words cannot begin to express how fucking disappointed I am. I’m not even angry anymore at this point. Contrary to what a plurality of Italians may believe, we don’t deserve this.
