This was probably an old graveyard that got abandoned . The was this thing years of people( thieves ) going to abandoned graveyards and digging up skulls .They were searching for gold and/or silver teeth and if the were to find any they would get them off either by smashing the skull or prying them off with pliers .
And yes , in the countryside there are a lot of abandoned graveyards , because there are a lot of abandoned villages ( or villages with like 5 people living in them ) , especially in the mountains and in places like Strandzha .
