Why is energy consumption so gas dependant when it’s so warm and sunny? Genuinely curious. Like I’ve seen us at times have over 50% green, and I thought this would be perfect wether for that. This is last 24 hours.

Plot and chart are completely useless without a legend.

Because Ireland doesn’t have a lot of solar installed, and neither does the UK.
Therefore when it’s hot we save a *little* by having less heating running, but that’s about it. When it’s *windy* we can power 75% of the country on that *and* export to the UK at the same time.
Well solar isn’t a thing here and the weather has been far too calm for the wind farms being able to produce much electricity so yeah gas power it is
So considering that most of our renewable is wind power then the worse the weather is the more energy we can get from it, so in times like now when its been fairly dry and calm fossil fuel plants have to take up the slack
What makes you say that this is weather dependent? the line chart is in _years_. The 24h pie chart is a snapshot and I don’t see how you can make a correlation to the weather.
Because gas is the “on demand” energy source.
Coal and oil plants are either always on, or when turned on take a long time to heat up.
With a gas plant, the grid operators can go from off to providing power in seconds.
Hydro can be used for this but is a bit slower too
We really need to get that burgundy down. Maybe push purple up by a few %
Gas and oil are paid for months in advance. We are burning fossil fuels which were bought by wholesalers at least three months ago.
Implementation of solar panels are really expensive, theres no incentive to get them privately implemented at your house unless the goverment is offering a grant for those that switch to solar power
Because there is usually very little wind on sunny calm days like today so we rely far more on gas fired generation.
Because we only have 1 coal plant , Moneypoint
Gas is much cleaner so all plants built in the past few decades have been gas.
Generally CCGT , combined cycle gas turbines which can also run in open cycle so as to provide a faster response.
On days like today there is no wind. In fact July and August are not windy at all so we have little renewables
You thought all that sun and calm would be perfect for our wind reliant green energy?
