This is technically not a flower, but it is a bloom: the amorphophallus titanum (giant penisplant) rarely blooms. Its natural habitat is Java, but Leiden has a few of these plants in greenhouses. They smell terribly, of diarrhea, vomit, and flyblown meat in the sun, probably to attract beetles for pollination. The penis can grow up to 3 meters high. It stays in bloom for two days.
If you want to go see it, do so today or tomorrow at the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden, a place worth a visit any day, but now extra so. Smell the horrendous stinky penisplant smell for yourself. I took this pic last night.
Epic! The largest “flower” in the world! Doesn’t it bloom like only once every 5 years?
What happens when it blooms? How does this plant give off its seeds?
I’m pretty sure this is the guy she tells me not to worry about. At least mine doesn’t smell. Not yet.
How did this get past the nsfw wall?
Stinken, die jongen. Dat geur vergeet ik nooit! Het is zo vies, door dit plaatje is mijn maag al verontrust.
