Leaked Cabinet Office Survey Shows Widespread Civil Service Unhappiness

  1. Civil Servants were getting the blame for thwarting Brexit last week.

    > From [Jacob Rees-Mogg’s] pointless Whitehall head-counts to the creepy notes he’s been leaving for workers

What’s the bet he writes them with a haunted pencil.

  2. I work with civil servants in my job and have been doing research/ focus groups / interviews with different departments over the last 6 months. It’s actually really sad to see how many of them genuinely care about their work and the potential impact they can make on the lives of the public whilst simultaneously feeling like their focus has shifted from being “a servant of the public” to a servant of the government’s will and demand.

There have been some interesting revelations though, particularly in the home office department. A few mentioned how upset people were about the govs response to the Sarah Everard case and one servant was “brave” enough to send an email addressed to all with a statement about it and asking people to sign a petition asking the government to do more. Within days the government actually acted on the petition and publicly changed their statements and talked about change / inquiries / more being done.

Did the gov actually do anything useful? That’s another question, but it was heartwarming to hear there are still people in the CV trying to pressure the government on these issues and being unafraid to speak out. I think they do their best to shelter us from a lot worse than we know about.

  3. Ahhhh, the Civil Service…

Where you could sack half of them.. and you wouldn’t even know they’d gone!
