No Cap on refugees confirmed.

  1. If Ireland calls for a cap on accepting refugees under the temporary protection directive, what do people suppose would happen?

As far as I can see there isn’t a lot of good for Ireland that could come from it. If we unilaterally impose such a limit, regardless of any legal implications of doing that, we would hugely damage our standing within the EU. We called for solidarity during the brexit negotiations, and received it, and we continue to receive it in relation to the NIP. When Member States support us on stuff we consider to be important that isn’t really their problem, we are expected to do the same. That’s how multilateral relations works, and Ireland has always played that game very well. It’s not just brexit, there are many many issues where we need support from other Member States for our perspectives, casting that aside would be really shortsighted.

The worst case scenario though would be that it would enflame matters in bordering countries that are taking well in excess of the numbers we are, both absolutely and proportionately, and thereby speed up calls for a redistribution mechanism to be established. That’s not at all in our interest, we would have far more under such a mechanism than we do under the current system of letting Ukrainians go where they want.

  2. Ireland is truly backwards

Come on over lads….but fuck knows where we will put you and sure fuck housing our own people we have a political agenda on her hands we need to look good

  3. It’s easy for them because most of the actual work helping refugees is being left up to charities and volunteer groups. I have absolutely zero problems with accepting refugees, I just hate how the government are grandstanding.

  4. Dear God is there ANYONE in government at the present time with even so much as one single brain cell between them? We simply don’t have anywhere to put them. End of story. People fleeing a terrifying, destructive conflict who are already exhausted and traumatised both emotionally and physically deserve far better. If any country offers help to another then they need to be in a position to provide it. But if said country can’t even help its own citizens either then they’re doubly in deep shit.

And yes, I’m aware other countries are also having problems with accommodation, but our situation is especially disastrous. I’m totally sympathetic to everything these people are enduring but objectively we here can’t do anything more for them in the immediate future unless drastic measures are taken to solve this problem.

  5. How stupid do you need to be. All for helping, but ffs if you take more in than we can support you’ll only fuck over everyone

  6. Oh man

The sun is shining, I’m in good form all things considered ….

And then I check this sub 🤦‍♂️

This country is a fucking shitshow

  7. The only reason we are taking these people is not to ”save the poor refugees” but because it is preferable to American foreign policy to have displaced people living in a tent city in an EU country than a tent city outside Lviv.

We are only taking displaced people from Ukraine so there is no internal pressure on the Ukrainian government and America can continue to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian.

  8. Time will expose this government for what they have done.

They never had the Ukrainians best interests at heart.
They told them to come here just to live in accommodation that wasn’t fit for the people of Ireland.
Now there’s tents waiting for them.

They’ve ignored our crys for more homes for years, favouring landlords and foreign investors and their inflated assets over the average families basic right to own a home.

  9. Yeah these people aren’t able to run a country or handle complex situations like this. You need really detailed coordinated planning to keep those numbers. Going round hassling B&B owners to take in a few ‘cranians isn’t going to work. Ukrainians will end up fleeing Ireland looking for refuge from the refuge.

  10. IMO there’s a simple explanation for this insanity – they want scapegoats for the ever-worsening shitshow they created with their idiotic housing policy. It’s a twofer – they can blame the deteriorating housing situation on a “refugee crisis”, and they can label critics of their refugee policy as “xenophobes” while they clutch their pearls on tv and radio

  11. The housing crisis is going to get worse. I feel bad for the Ukrainians, this government will invite them all in and then provide nothing for them.

  12. A no cap scenario really feels like it defies common sense. Either we’re putting refugees in what scarce houses are available and further causing the housing market to crash and burn like a pile of manure drenched in gasoline, or we’re not putting them in houses and are forcing them to live in tents during the coming winter.

  13. good thing we still have direct provision up and running to take care of those pesky brown refugees: we need all the space we can get for these poor white ones

  14. This Is unsustainable and the gov do not give a fuck. I’m ashamed of our government for another reason now for the treatment of refugees in this country
