On an internet deep dive today, I discovered Jameson Gibson-Park, the scrum-half for the Irish rugby team, grew up on Great Barrier Island, a sparsely populated island paradise off New Zealand’s north east coast.

Even though only 900 people live on the island, it has an Irish pub, which unlike most Irish pubs abroad, looks like it serves a half-decent pint of Guinness (although the head looked a little big in one of the images).

According to Google maps, it’s over 18,000 km from Ireland, which may make The Currach the furthest Irish pub from Ireland, and may also make Gibson-Park, the Irish citizen born the furthest distance away from Ireland.

  1. Was there for a wedding about 3 years ago, groom was from cork, one of my best life experiences, beach wedding, reception in the pub, magical few days. The Guinness went down a treat, plenty of chat how good it was. There’s no mains electric either, all generator power so you couldn’t use too many appliances at once, the night sky was super clear, full of stars. Surprises me that it’s not the most remote

  2. I’ve been there! I did a few comedy gigs at the pub, the last being in January just before I few home to Ireland. The owner is the loveliest woman you’ll ever meet, the food and craic is amazing, and the views around the island are absolutely breathtaking.

The flight in is a little bumpy though!
