If Russia is for real, this won’t be yet another crisis, it will be the end of Europe’s geopolitical status quo and open the floodgates to at least half of the continent’s descent into total war.
If only diplomatic efforts could be focused on actually addressing the crisis rather than reassuring Poland and holding their hand.
Back in the 70s the Pentagon estimated that the opening stages of a 100% conventional war restricted to Europe between NATO and the Soviet Union would kill 40,000 soldiers per week – say, 20,000 on each side. Even now that’s probably politically sellable when losses are divided between nato members – especially among the eastern members who will bear the brunt of the fighting.
However, we don’t live in the 70s, so let’s think about the opening stages of a modern conventional war between Russia and nato: the most important factor is that we live in an era where armies are equiped with large numbers of conventional missiles with pinpoint accuracy that can target every sq.meter of Europe and to a lesser extent the US. That allows for the initial targeting of individual politicians, the mega rich, the generals etc, rather than the usual anonymous masses.
There’ll be no war.
Lets hope putin doesnt have the balls and his mental illness didnt flare up.
If he does though, lets make it mutual effort to annihilate his army, replace russian government with a democratic one and reform russia like japan, germany and south korea were reformed after ww2 – from miserable dictatorships to prosperous tech giants.

A lot of kids here talking about conventional wars between nations with strategic nuclear weapons should go and read a little bit about MAD doctrine.
In the other hand, Poland, Lithuania, et. al. can make all the posturing and requests to NATO they want, with zero chance of influencing the key decision makers in NATO. This is just a show to get more votes from the generally dumb population that support them.
