Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael made a disastrous mistake coalescing in 2020

  1. Hmmm…I don’t understand. They do exactly what I expected them to do, which is why I did not vote for either of them two years ago.

  2. The reality is, Ireland has – notwithstanding a massive recession – some of the most wilfully misinformed voters in the world.

For years people have simultaneously demanded more housing and fought like tigers to prevent local development.

People rail against the HSE but protest against dangerous local A&Es being shut down.

People demand tax cuts and spending increases.

With a political system and a media that never challenges these myths, we’re falling into all of the traps that led to Bertie Ahern and that wildly dangerous FF government.

  3. It’s interesting to see how decarbonisation has become a stick we beat and shame each other with. Sinn Féin are accused of being soft on climate change while the greens are undermined, by some of the same people, for taking business class flights. Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael etc don’t seem to get the same scrutiny though they and independents are the biggest barriers to the change required to decarbonise the economy. About 750 million cars have to come off the road and we have to cull the herd. Turf will have to be phased out and we may pay higher taxes on fuel. None of these things are popular and nobody wants to do them at least we have that much in common. But we seem to just point fingers and shame one another. It’s like we’ve all agreed to jump off a cliff together but some people are paranoid that it’s some kind of prank and they’ll jump but nobody else will. Our path to decarbonisation is being hampered by local politics, just like we all knew it would be.

  4. Yep – now people know them as FFG. They chose short-term gain when they formed their coalition. They’ve basically cemented themselves as “official Ireland”, and are no longer seen as alternatives to each other.

Long-term I think they’ll either have to officially merge, or one of them will die out.

  5. We already knew they were exactly the same. Issue is, things are so fucked sinn féin won’t be able to fix any of it.
