Doctors to overhaul car wreck rescue techniques amid new evidence

  1. TL:DR getting people out of car wrecks quickly via self extraction where possible saves more lives and doesn’t have much impact on spinal damage.

Tory party take note; get out of the car crash now.

  2. That’s very interesting – goes to show how we have to keep questioning and researching even seemingly resolved questions.

Certainly when I was in that kind of world (A long time ago, tbf) it was simply a given – you were taught to minimise movement unless you have absolutely no choice whatsoever.

  3. Motorsport has been onto this for a while now and unsurprisingly sees a lot of crashes and people in destroyed vehicles.

Best practice is self extraction. It turns out people are really good at not injuring themselves further, their bodies literally won’t let them.

While another person can twist your neck extracting you for example making an injury worse it’s almost impossible to do it to yourself because of the pain, muscle spasms and so on.

Basically if a crash victim is conscious and in any sort of semi sensible mental state the best way to get them out is to clear any blockages and let them get on with it themselves. The chances of them exacerbating an injury are exponentially smaller than if others assist them.
