Middlesbrough mayor Andy Preston defends fundraiser for abusive pensioner

  1. Reading the article, I have a lot of sympathy for the pensioner. He swore at the kids who assaulted him and tore his fence down twice, seems hard not to think that he is the victim here.

Anyone who’s lived on an estate with a group of kids as described that cause so much pain, cost and suffering would also understand.

  2. >Bernard John Higgins, from Hemlington, was convicted at Teesside Magistrates’ Court after confronting a youth allegedly responsible for causing trouble on the 65-year-old’s estate.

    >Middlesbrough mayor Andy Preston asked people to donate £1 each towards the £107 Mr Higgins was ordered to pay.

This would never have happened if the police did their job and dealt with anti-social behaviour!

I once heard of a local cllr (who was apparently a loon) saying the only way to get a police response if your house was being burgled was to phone them and say you’ve got a gun and you’re going to shoot the burglar.

    Edit: typo

  3. > Cleveland Police said the incident saw him “seeking out and making threats towards a child under 10, including explicit threats of violence”.

    > But Mr Preston said he had met Mr Higgins and understood he had been assaulted twice by yobs as well as having his fence torn down.

Right… So because he’s apparently been assaulted, he should be allowed to go around threatening and terrorising pre-teens?

  4. Collecting money to pay someone’s fine is effectively making that person immune from prosecution. It ought to be illegal.
