1. Sunday World : enough said.
2. The Zoo confirms that these issues were *not* raised with the zoo, so this is almost certainly disgruntled former workers who are *not* qualified to make those determinations.
Purely from personal observation, they claim that Kildare the zebra was suffering from paralysis : an episode of The Zoo was aired on RTE with that footage, and the animal was clearly not paralysed. It was in severe distress and didn’t have enough energy to stand, but it was capable of movement, keeping it’s neck and head raised, breathing for itself and conscious.
Jesus that’s heartbreaking. I only saw the episode of the Zoo there the other day where Kildare died. Poor creatures.
I really hope this isn’t true.
We’re not there yet but future generations will be amazed that we housed animals like this for our pleasure
The entire saga of Kildare the zebra was shown on the RTE show, why would Dublin Zoo agree to air that if they thought it showed maltreatment? The zebra was not paralysed anyway, it did have trouble standing up by itself. It was given a chance overnight to see if it could recover its strength, when it didn’t it was euthanised.
I remember years ago (80s) they had a very distressed polar bear that was constantly shaking its head and they just left him / her on display. It was awful.
The only two cents I will add to this. I know a zookeeper in Dublin Zoo personally. They have told me some stories that, are questionable to say the least. Certainly not as bad as these stories. But still not good.
