Nice share. That’s actually very interesting, this comes into the practical and very useful to know category. More people need to know about this.
Is this just heatwaves or does any extreme weather count? I can remember living in rentals hat had no heating and that was very depressing.
i was going to post a sarcastic “wow, wonder why!” but the article is genuinely pretty interesting so I have to shelf my sarcasm for later
wait… you mean my MH conditions haven’t even reached their final form yet 😮
well *fuck*
(interesting article though!)
I wonder if this is a contributing factor to why people in the US south and Australia are such headcases. As well as worsening mental health conditions, heat waves have been shown to correlate with increased aggression and crime spikes.
In other news water is wet
Honestly Summer is easily my least favourite season of the year. I love the activities and social events, but not being able to sleep at night and been swarmed by bugs nonstop is miserable. Plus I get headaches really easily from the heat.
How come? I would have thought the sun coming is much better than the wet and cloudy of uk.
It’s nice that there are plenty of mental health provisions….oh wait
And certain medications to treat mental health conditions have the side effect of making you more susceptible to the heat and sun
Damn this feeble meat inside our heads, it’s so hard to please
I have to say, all things considered my anxiety and OCD symptoms have lessened while it’s been hot so I’m the inverse here.
Frankly I’m the complete opposite of this, i might be laying on the floor with 3 fans pointed at me but I’m considerably happier in hot weather than say winter, when I really get the blues
They’re uncomfortable but heatwaves still give me the summer feeling
the link between hot weather and violence has been well established
Fucking hate the heat. Cant go anywhere because its so busy. Nearby park is full of littering scumbags and it will just smell of a combination of literal shit, barbecue smoke, and weed. Can’t sit and relax in the garden because theres always at least one dickhead nearby who wants to play loud shitty dance or rap music all day. Cant sit and relax in the fucking house either because I can still hear the same shitty music. All the local rivers/streams are full of garbage so the whole place smells like a sewer. Its like being stuck in a noisy, shitty sauna.
The heat has basically switched off my antidepressants, really struggling.
There are quite a few chronic conditions that come along with intolerance to heat, Long Covid being one of those, which will result in a lot of people getting headaches, dizziness and mental health that is worsened by the heat. We have well over 3 million people in the country with conditions that are intolerant to heat increases.
My anxiety and depression always gets much worse in the summer, to the extent that I wonder if I have legit seasonal affective disorder, and I am *dreading* the next few days. The only good thing is hopefully we’ll get some decent thunder storms afterwards. The thought that this may be a regular thing every summer depresses me further and I’d love to move to a cold country to escape it.
Counting down to the cold, dark days of autumn and winter. I won’t be able to afford to eat after paying my energy bills, but at least I’ll feel like myself again.
Yeah, if you’re the type of person who prefers staying indoors this doesn’t surprise me.
Surely the sun gives us vitamin D which is beneficial, so in some ways it must help? FYI I haven’t read the article.
I’ve often ‘joked’ I have SAD but the wrong way round. I medicate for anxiety and depression but I always dread summer which ramps up further and further with the heat.
Also worth nothing that some antidepressants make you more susceptible to overheating.
This heat is beyond what we are used to and what we are supposed to be able to function at. Mental health issues can make it difficult to think straight at the best of times, so anything that makes it harder is going to make things that little bit harder. People should not be afraid to take mental health days if they need to, sitting inside with the blinds/curtains drawn if needs be. You need to protect your mental health as much as your physical health.
Really don’t get all this heat wave bollocks. Most brits pay thousands every year to have this heat non stop for a week or two as an improvement to mental health.
It’s summer. Enjoy it.
Only because media outlets drive the panic with their bullshit stories. Just fuck off with the bull and people will be fine.
I am definitely struggling with my anxiety when it gets like this. It’s like my brain’s resilience lowers to 0 and I’m panicking and worrying for absolutely no reason whatsoever

Sorry for posting a yahoo article, although this is better than most.
It’s more of a PSA – watch your mental as well as physical health over the coming days.

Not enough sun? Mental health gets bad
Too much sun? Again, worse mental health
