This happens a lot in American football because of the repeated high speed head trauma, I hope he’s doing well, we maybe should rethink head protection for sports like this
😭
Horrible news
41 is very young even for early onset. I knew a woman in her early 60s with early onset and her GP told me that the dementia can end up extremely advanced because the body still has a lot of life left in it.
CTE is horrible. What an awful situation.
We’re going to see more of this as those who played in the professional era age.
What does he mean when he refers to “episodes”?
Hopefully one day the realization will dawn that setting people against each other physically in the name of sport is quite simply really, really stupid
I posted this on r/RugbyUnion but it’s worth posting here too, though many who don’t know the idiosyncrasies of the game will surely downvote me. This situation is bad but for those calling for rugby to be made “safer”, there is not much more that can be done save for making it into some non-contact version of touch. Hits to the head aren’t even the main problem here. It’s hits to the body and the systemic forces that are felt by the player, as opposed to isolated contacts to the head, that are the problem because there are so many of them leading to sub concussive events. And they’ll continue to be a problem because you can’t stop them happening without changing the essence of rugby as a sport. Now r/RugbyUnion can childishly downvote me all they bloody well want but this is a fact. In such a politically correct sub, it probably won’t go down well with the crowd who cry “safety first” for every little thing in life but the best thing we can do is give players all the evidence so that they go into this inherently dangerous sport with eyes wide open. So that they know what the risks are, what the rewards are and what the ratio of risk to reward is. On that basis, each player and parent can make a decision as to whether this sport is for them. It won’t be for all, and that’s fine but like boxing, MMA and fucking sky diving, there are risks attached and that’s ok. I hope Ryan Jones goes well by the way.
