Better call an emergency meeting and do an emergency budget. Can’t slow down the refugee industry.
They could do what they have been doing in A and Es. Just get rid of the bed from each cubicle and put 6 chairs in.
Not everyone can come to live in Ireland.
Most of us recognised this several years ago.
It’s time the Government recognised it too.
Enticing traumatised Ukrainians over with the promise of accomodation, which he knew was a lie even while saying it, was an absolute dick move from a dismal little Taoiseach more interested in pats on the head from Auntie Ursula than in ensuring people in this country are fed and housed.
The virtue signalling was always gonna catch up with them
Why is nobody but the Irish government surprised?
Seen this coming a mile off, maybe this will light a fire under the govts ass to get up and do more to sort out housing.
State runs out of accommodation for ~~new Ukrainian refugees and asylum seekers~~ **anyone**
Yeah, this was an inevitability I’m afraid. We were expecting up to 100,000 and we had capacity for about 30k readily available. As conditions in Ukraine stay as dire as they are, it’s not surprising that the number of people fleeing continues to increase.
It’s disappointing to see that the narrative has shifted so quickly to “Ireland’s full”. These are mostly women and children, the most “palatable” group and we’re still turning on them. My heart aches to see these people literally fleeing the destruction of their homes and here we are squabbling about if we are willing to put up with the discomfort of looking at them.
And before anyone asks, yeah I know it’s coming, I offered my home, it was deemed not suitable because it has a number of shortcomings.
Are the government still saying there’s no limit on the number we take in? What’s their solution now??
There’s a quote on RTE saying “nobody expected this”. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK how could you not expect this???????
This didn’t come out of thin air and O’Gorman was still shiting on in The Dail last week about the white paper and his plan to end Direct Provision.
Government: How could Sinn Fein do this?
The government needs to grow a pair of balls and learn how to say no.
Honestly why did the govt make people out to be right wing loons for just asking the question of how many can we take?
Another massive failure by this govt. There’s no room for anyone here anymore, yet they pat themselves on the back yesterday as if they’re doing a fantastic job. The arrogance of this govt annoys me more than anything, I actually feel such a strong sense of hatred towards how they’re running this country.
I mean we can’t house our own population.
If you’re a refugee in a hotspot like Syrians in Turkey, then you’re put in a tent. If we don’t have accommodation then that will have to do.
I’m working in direct provision right now, having been for some time now and I can tell you anecdotally that there is likely a fair amount of unutilised capacity in most DP centres
Anyone who expressed any doubt about how many people we were taking in was immediately dismissed as racist piece of shit and ignored.
Theres this weird perception that because historically Irish people have emigrated, that we now have some moral obligation to take in any amount of people.
The reality is Ireland is a tiny country. We have limited resources that have been bursting at the seams already for decades. We need to have tight control over the demand for those resources so we can plan effectively. Unfortunately the horse has already bolted on this one. Genuinely concerned about what the next few years are gonna look like
Oh no who could have seen this coming….
This was mooted months ago. The EU should have been flooding money and resources into Poland and the Baltics to help accommodate the refugee surge. Instead, Ireland is getting the refugees who had the means and wherewithal to get out early without the means and wherewithal to accommodate them.
Time for the Irish to step up and open their doors for all the displaced Ukrainians. If you don’t you’re nothing but a racist bigot. /s
Yes, and also we should all return to all the offices we used to work in before the pandemic, cause we learned literally effing nothing out of this whole thing.
God! Who could of expected that?
The comments in here are really disappointing.
What this country needs is more accommodation both so that we can house our own and to help the Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war torn country.
Don’t blame the Ukrainians. If we sent them all back home today the situation in this country wouldn’t get much better.
We need our government to start rapidly building affordable social housing on a major scale.
Heard on the radio that is shocking people have to sleep on chairs.
While people literally die and sleep on our streets
I’m all about helping people coming from war but when you have families out on the street how can you be shocked the government have run out of places to put these refugees
And still letting more and more in, maybe put a cap on it and stop sending over people we can’t help we are a island not a continent
So are we gonna do the dutch thing of forcing households to take in the Ukrainians now or will they wait a few weeks to try implementing that here?
I don’t get where you’re going with some of your replies to people…”Where do you suggest they go”.
With all do respect, why is that our problem? We can’t hold anymore people. We have accommodated so many refugees already, why can’t they go elsewhere? Plenty of countries in the EU have taken a far smaller percentage than we have.
It isn’t racism, xenophobia or whatever way you want to swing it, we don’t have room. Simple as. Unless you want to sleep on the floor of the airport, of course.
Oh well, sucks to be them.
At least Michael and Leo got in the EU good books and can walk into a cushy EU position after they finish in politics here.
Being just above broke and having no problem just throwing on a jumper instead of heating most of my adult life had made me quite comfortable with things getting worse and worse to be honest
DP centres are all housing many residents who have their status and are now working away merrily with no rent costs and zero intention of moving out….what happened to the ‘ save us from these DP hellholes’ brigade? not so much methinks, too busy laughing at Irish stupidity.
What do you do if you don’t cap off a limit and keep bringing them over…..make them sleep on the hard ground because as it is now they are literally sleeping on chairs.
I am all about logically helping out refugees but you need to logically think about how we are going to help these refugees when we have absolutely no where to put them and have reached the limit of housing capacity to put them in places… it’s not a matter of it, it’s a matter of now.
