I’ve recently relocated to London and I’m trying to find a new provider to get a UK number.

The issue here is the signal is shockingly bad on each British provider but somehow my Irish sim card with Vodafone whilst roaming is stronger, racking up around 15 – 20mbps download/upload.

I’ve tried the UKs version of Vodafone, Three and Smarty, all of which come in at a shocking 0.93Mpbs to 2.93Mpbs download and 0.00 Upload. Literally, Zero!

I’m not whining or looking for a quick fix; rather, I’m trying to figure out why and how this is problematic from a mechanical and software standpoint? Is it something related to the infrastructure?

Attached are images of the slow speed tests with Three. You can see the bars at the top right showing the Irish Vodafone roaming sim being stronger.

Anyone with some insight know how/why this is happening?

  1. First – your roaming sim will generally go with the strongest network signal ad you can roam onto any network. That said, 20-30 is on the low side for 4g for any network in London. I typically get 50-100mb in Belfast.

Second – that’s far too low for and normally working service. There must be something wrong with the network settings or data bars in place on the sims? Are you in a particular blackspot or are you seeing this everywhere?

  2. You must be in a black spot, I’ve always gotten really strong 4/5G signal in London with Three UK.

Check the APN settings are correct / try another non-Three or VF network.
