It’s a new musical theatre concept album based on Kalevala, the Finnish national epic. The music and lyrics are by Finnish-American composer-lyricist Johanna Telander, and the cast features musical theatre performers from different countries. The most famous of them is probably Ramin Karimloo, who’s played roles such as the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera and Jean Valjean in Les Misérables, as Väinämöinen.
For everyone who’s not super into musicals (which I guess is most people): a musical concept album is a recording of a musical that hasn’t been performed onstage yet. Besides giving musical fans something new to listen to, the purpose of such albums is trying to catch the attention of potential theatre producers.
Personally, I think it’s a lot of fun to listen to!
