Christmas Market opened this weekend in Zagreb

  1. This was easily the worst Christmas market I’ve ever been to but I think it really comes down to your tastes.

Basically, there is insanely loud music in most places and not Christmas music but more like party music. It’s not at all the feel-good style of normal Christmas markets. But also Serbia/Croatia (Balkans?) seem to love music that leaves your ears ringing. I’m just not used to it.

I also thought the food was really boring – every stand just sells a sausage.

The one I can recommend is the gazebo with live music and a bunch of regional specialty foods, which is in the middle of some green area, outside of the main centre. Not sure if they do that every year but it was there a couple years ago.

I hope I don’t get downvoted for this honest opinion but I wanted to share it because I saw some marketing hype about Zagreb having the “best Christmas market” and that’s why I went – but you might be super disappointed, if you are expecting a classical one.

If you want to hang out with your friends like you’re at a music concert and don’t mind eating only sausages, it’s probably a really cool experience. If you want a more classical Christmas market, go to the gazebo area or better don’t go to Zagreb. Ljubljana’s is much nicer!

  2. Somewhat related but it’d be really neat if we all got and posted photos of our local Christmas markets, not sure how you’d avoid spamming the sub with them but I’d like to see how everything differs across Europe.

  3. Ahhhhh I’ve been there this summer! Not my favorite place in Croatia but it was nice to walk around for a bit. Love the country.

  4. Ahh yeahhh ….
    Christmas markets …..
Just plain fun and laughter, buying decorations we mostly don’t need ….
Good plain fun, up to a few years ago, when some jihadi’s started targetting them ….

  5. my town has the holiday lights already hanging(sinterklaas is a national holiday celebrated from mid/end november till 5th december and that is the time the holiday decorations get pulled out of the closet

  6. Christmas markest here are closed becouse of covid. But mass events up to 100 people are allowed and farmers markets are allowed too. So some cities opened “winter farmer markets” and some have “mass events with small markets”. Closing Christmas markets (they are outside on fresh air) is stupid becouse inside shops are still opened.
