Hi all

Was looking for a mains water stopcock and can’t find one on the property site but this is in the ditch on the road. I know where water enters the property and there’s no valve – it just disappears into the wall so there doesn’t seem to be a valve in the house.

I’ve fixed my problem without needing to turn the water off but for future reference for myself, how do I turn this off? It doesn’t turn easily and I don’t want to force it and break it.

Many thanks

  1. If its fitted correctly the handle should be in line with the direction of water flow when open. It’ll probably only turn one way, 90 degrees. Chances are you won’t be able to break it if you turn it the wrong way.

  2. If it’s old then the valve could be seized. Even 10 years old without being ever touched could result in it being seized.

Contact Irish Water and report it. I did the same last year when the same happened mine and they were out and had the entire thing replaced the following week.
