40C-plus temperatures a ‘wake-up call on climate change’, says expert

  1. Well durr, for the past few years the temperature has been rising and rising in the summer. Climate change in action. Why it is often getting colder and colder in the winter period too.

  2. I wish that the decades of scientific evidence and experts telling everyone this was going to happen had been a ‘wake-up call’.

  3. Politicians will not do anything! Easier attitude as they do not stay long enough in power ro be hanged as the guilty ones, one day. They want to grab as much as possible for themselves and theur rich friends. But… Then we are all guilty as only a small percentage of really concerned people agree to change their consumer behaviour. I see in a near future with martial laws and fascists in charge. What a mess. Good luck.

  4. Now watch as everyone in a position to do anything significant slams that snooze button for the 800th time.

  5. Not a scientist, however I have been lead to believe that icecaps melt and reform over time, the gulf stream slows and stop due to the fresh water, and because of this the ice caps freeze due to the lack of warm water, and round and around we go. In other words the climate changes, and always has done.

I am also lead to believe that fossil remains in the south of England have been found of insects that are normally only found in mediterranean climates. This suggests that England was at some time a lot warmer.

I also wonder why councils around the county are cutting down trees and or pruning them down to no more then stumps, if as I am also lead to believe, they contribute to the mitigation of “climate change” aka global warming that was re branded as data show that this is not the case.

  6. Is it a wakeup call when no one with power actually wakes up? To them it’s an alarm that you can tap snooze.

  7. This isn’t a bloody wake up call, this is your boss calling you at 12 wondering where the hell you are because you were out partying and drinking and didn’t get to bed till 5am.

I’m not saying its too late, I’m just saying if we don’t get our arse to work sharpish we’re fucked.

  8. Hardly a wake up call when every other person of a certain age cites one freak year in the 70s which was consistently hot (but not reaching the extreme peaks that we’ve seen this year)

I’m an avid gardener of about 10 years. I’m in my early 30s. Even in that time I’ve noticed significantly decreased rainfall consistently (you can always count on a gardener to pay attention to rainfall).

Citing one freak year in the 70s and how “we all lived through that and we called it summer” makes me assume someone is stupid.

It was a 15 day heatwave. It topped out at 32c in parts of the country (which is happening relatively often now looking back at the last two decades of weather data). A full 5c cooler than most of the country will be this heatwave and 8c cooler than its meant to top out at in parts of the country. Its not even comparable.

  9. Pro tip from a Texan: go to your local hardware store, get some hose like a small water line. Poke a hole in it and tape it to the front of a desk fan. Run water from a bottle into the hose and it will mist cool air. Very effective in a small area.

    Good luck!

  10. And it will still result in zero fucking action unless a higher up in the grand scheme of politics dies from heatstroke. The politicians need to wake up now otherwise we are all fucked

  11. I reckon the wake up call might be when parents and grant parents start dieing because of it. We’re expecting a lot more excess deaths this year than last due to the heat.

  12. I really wonder what billionaires, company CEOs and govt ministers think of the climate crisis?

They can’t be so stupid to think that somehow they won’t be affected?

  13. Wake up call that we have acted too late and are now fucked more like. Even if we reduce industrial activity to pandemic lockdown levels they would still be too high to halt global warming. Not a matter of if we hit an irreversible point now, but when.

  14. Between 2005-2017, Uk Co2 emissions have fallen from 561.543 (Mt CO2) to 379.150 (MT CO2), a reduction that puts it 18th in the world for reduction, and the largest economy of the top twenty.

The EU as a whole between 2005-2017 has reduced emissions by 19.5%.

The real battle is in countries such as the US, and China.

  15. The uncomfortable truth is, for the rich a 2degree world will still be plenty comfortable, maybe even more so as their land investments in siberia become fertile.

Or they can charge us three times for their gas 1. For gas itself 2.carbon capture tariffs and 3. As hydrogen all the while telling us it is our fault the worlds fucked.

  16. And yet the government has rolled over, slapped the snooze button, mumbled something about the economy then gone back to sleep.

  17. And what do they expect from the common man exactly?

How many of us are the ones in charge of factories, or running multi-billion dollar corporations?

They’re the ones who need to change, not us. Because whatever we do is always wiped out within minutes because of some big ass factory somewhere.

  18. Bit fucking late for that hahaha, enjoy your life while it lasts and think long and hard before making any new human beings.

  19. a wake up call that it’s too fucking late and corporations have fucked us by acting like their abhorrent level of pollution was ok but we were the cunts for not recycling enough

  20. It won’t be. The people in the position to make actual change happen will ultimately do *just* enough to make it seem like they’re doing something, but really the actual change will be so slow and ineffective that it does barely more than doing nothing would have done.

I’ve lost all faith in our government’s ability to tackle climate change.

  21. In all honesty I’m going to wait and see if this actually happens. Our press has a habit of talking up weather news, wether it’s and “artic bomb” or “Britain is going to be hotter than the sun next week” our weather reporting is shit.

So far this summer has been below average for me hot weather wise so I’m not convinced. I’m not denying global warming by the way guys.

  22. So where was the outcry 19 years ago in 2003 when we had record temperatures at 38 degrees across the southeast?

There was no outcry because it was explained and projected as a heatwave, it was uncomfortable for most but you just get on with it.

And there certainly wasn’t any cries of climate change, fact is the jetstream of high pressure that moves in a line northwards from southern Europe tends to hit us in varying patterns especially (you’d never guess) between June and early August. It has actually been this way for centuries.

Please do not think I am being ignorant of climate change etc but it’s very easy for things like this to be misconstrued.

There’s a reason the news seems to be in panic mode about this stuff.

A – It’s apparently news and it’s bad but gets the ratings / hits

B – It genuinely does back up the political idea that we’re all going to perish unless something is done etc etc

Honestly folks, we haven’t even been able to look after ourselves as a species for a long time, let alone control the weather

    Good luck with that

    Over and out 😘

  23. Yeah, it sure gets hot in the summer. Who’d have thunk’d it?!

Next up you’ll be telling me it gets cold in the winter, like that’ll ever happen(!)

  24. The UK itself is making great progress to being carbon neutral. The Germans in their infinite EU leadership wisdom decided to switch off their nuclear power plants and due to their reliance of Russian oil and gas are now burning huge amounts of coal. Don’t even get me started on China & Indian, even if we were carbon neutral now it wouldn’t make the slightest bit of difference.

Commercial Nuclear fusion better hurry up with carbon capture we may stand a chance.

  25. Fuck off ‘expert’, most people are very awake on the issue. Why don’t you use your expertise to pinpoint government fallacies and shout those for everyone to see? This has been repeated every week for 50years. This has been an emergency since before I was born. It was cheaper to fix back then. God I hate everyone 😂

  26. Lol, really, because a few years ago, they claimed dropping summer temperatures and bad winters in the UK were down to global warming. I mean, which is it? You can’t have it both ways.

  27. Ok, I’m taking Lorna to see her mum in hospital about 1.30 so give us a ring first x

  28. I still haven’t seen a day get past 25C in the midlands. Is anyone measuring the outdoor temperatures for themselves and checking if what we’re being told is actually true? Everything the weather forecast has ever said to me has been wrong even when I broaden the daily forecast and check to see if it matches any single day in the following week….

I wonder if there are similar problems in climate science as in medicine, which by the way is best coming from the mouths of qualified people, not social media posts! Head over to the British Medical Journal website and look for a peer reviewed article titled, “The Illusion of Evidence Based Medicine” if you want to see where the problems are. Our systems are compromised and our regulators don’t seem to be functioning very well.
