More voters deserting Tories because of energy bills than Boris Johnson, poll finds | The Independent

  1. with a new leader coming in and Starmer not seeming to be setting the political scene alight, in fact he’s spending a lot of time waffling on about how bad Boris was, just speculating that these Tories may well begin to return to planning to vote for them again.

  2. They’ll end up voting for tories because they’d rather vote for a party that makes them poor but who wants to target “woke” , immigrants, trans etc…. Then actually vote for a party that tries to make their life better….

  3. You get a lot of ‘no party could forsee the energy crisis’ nonsense from Tories like we haven’t been warned about energy prices for years. Cameron came in on a green energy pledge that the Tories did nothing with. We could have been building wind, solar and hydro power alternatives for twelve years and be in complete control of our own energy by now, while also saving the climate.

Instead we’ve got Ministers saying wind turbines are eyesores while simultaneously suggesting building nuclear power plants… twelve years of ignoring the problem caused this issue, not war in Ukraine.

  4. This country could using zero gas to make electricity half the time if Boris and his Conservative predecessors (back to Cameron) had not blocked onshore wind turbine developments. Any time you see a thick light blue bar (lots of wind generation) in [https://gridwatch.co.uk](https://gridwatch.co.uk) then remember that shows we could be reducing the orange bar (natural gas) to zero if we had more wind turbines.

Then our electricity would be a LOT cheaper than it is now!

    Thanks, Boris & chums.

  5. Energy Sovereignty. That’s how we need to sell renewables to the Brexit brigade. No more giving money to oppressive middle Eastern regimes or the Russians. No more reliance on global markets. Just clean, local red white and blue energy.

  6. Who’d have thunk that people would care more about feeding, clothing, and sheltering themselves rather than whether someone else is a complete twat on a personal level?

Honestly, I would rather have a corrupt, rude, philandering, PM that actually carries out policies that solve the problems we are facing both now and in the future (inflation, income inequality, climate change, etc), than some nice polite man in a suit that essentially does nothing.

The problem with Boris is that he was both obnoxious and did nothing. The problem with Starmer is that he’s the latter.

We’re in a weird place in western politics where there is an obsession with the means rather than the ends.

  7. Why is this a surprise to anyone?

Tories care more their wallets than the state of the country.

Deeply ironic seeing as the Tories have a vested interest in keeping them poor.

  8. The UK government should build a strategy to put solar panels on every building in the country, in my opinion.

The home owner contributes x%, they get all the power they generate.

The home owner doesn’t contribute towards them, but agrees to have them, they get an x% discount in their electricity bills.

The home owner refuses, they get fuck all and pay full whack for electricity.

All surplus power from government supplied panels goes to the grid without the payback we currently have.

Those that already have solar should get a decent rate for the energy they pay back I to the grid (assuming they don’t get replacement panels or a capacity upgrade on the scheme).

This (along with insulation subseries or bulk buy) would also pave the way for heatpumps (+heat exchangers) in homes to replace gas.

  9. Well, duh? Tories don’t care about anything until it affects them. Why would they care about what Boris has said and done? They only care when their bills go up.

  10. I swear to god people in this country are beyond help. How the fuck can they constantly vote against their best interests
