First red warning for extreme heat as temperatures in London to hit 40C next week

  1. I’m genuinely worried about this, I don’t think we’re taking it seriously enough. I don’t think we just should be told to carry on as normal. They say they don’t expect schools to close, but a lot of schools are like greenhouses, with big glass windows and little ventilation. Countries that usually deal with these temperatures have the infrastructure to try and get through it while we have basically no protection. It’s not just going to be a bit hot, it’s going to be dangerous and, on top of that, we basically don’t have a functioning health service.

  2. Let’s get this straight … it is going to be hot for a few days. And then everyone will get back to moaning about the rubbish weather and hankering after a trip to roast on a sunny beach somewhere abroad.

There is this thing called ‘shade’. Humans have been using it since time began. Then there is a thing called a cool shower/bath. Windows. They usually open, so if you have a breeze they can come in handy. If its hotter out than in, keep them closed and draw the drapes.

Really, many people around the world, with a lot less infrastructure than the UK, manage just fine… and it often goes on for months! Funny too that uk population wants to get out there and enjoy it.

Of course it is a danger for children who are not properly cared for (i.e. the parents just let them play out in the sun for hours on end) and also for the elderly who may have trouble taking that cool shower or feeling distress due to other complications… fans should be provided to the vulnerable. Cheap as chips. Also, spare a thought for essential workers who have to just ‘get on with it’. But I think allowances to ‘chill’ can be made.

Edited to add – one thing that is really sad is the state that dogs and cats can get into…. no way to take that fur coat off. So have the hosepipe or bucket on hand. They will love a good dousing.

  3. I get using these records to amplify climate change problems and that we don’t have air conditioning to cope well, and that heat stroke is a thing, and that there will be some kids who swim in canals and drown. That when a whole country is affected, of course there might be deaths. When lightning strikes and some trees fall down, people die. No one can imagine themselves or their friends dieing that way but.. it happens.

However…the hysteria I can’t make sense of. Like you go on holiday to somewhere sunny and…it’s this heat. You put on sun scream and have to drink more.

I was in Washington DC and Philadelphia in May, both burning hot. Philadelphia I couldn’t believe, like wowww. 40c not sure but it was close. I walked around all day in the sun then got a bus.

I went to Japan in August a few years ago…boiling. The Hoover Dam too once…like in an oven, unbelievable.

  4. It’s currently showing 41c in Lincoln. Hard to imagine it, I was hot yesterday in 28.

Looking at the advanced forecast though, humidity looks like it’s going to be between 30 & 40% which is kind of a saving grace in this situation.
