#Russia’s Gazprom declares force majeure on some gas supplies to Europe
——–
LONDON, July 18 (Reuters) – Russia’s Gazprom (GAZP.MM) has declared force majeure on gas supplies to Europe to at least one major customer, according to the letter from Gazprom dated July 14 and seen by Reuters on Monday.
The letter said Gazprom, which has a monopoly on Russian gas exports by pipeline, could not fulfil its supply obligations owing to “extraordinary” circumstances outside its control.
It said the force majeure measure, a clause invoked when a business is hit by something beyond its control, was effective from deliveries starting from June 14.
A trading source said the letter concerned supplies through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, a major supply route to Germany and beyond.
Gazprom had no immediate comment.
The measure will likely escalate tensions between Russia and the West over the Russian invasion of Ukraine, action Moscow calls a “special military operation”.
The European Union, which has imposed sanctions on Moscow, aims to stop using Russian fossil fuels by 2027 but wants to supplies to continue for now as it shifts away from Russian supplies.
Russian gas supplies have dropped via major routes, including via Ukraine and Belarus and through Nord Stream 1 under the Baltic Sea.
Nord Stream 1 is currently undergoing maintenance.

Five years.
Destroy Ukraine for 5 more years, but keep sending us gas, please.
If you don’t do something when it actually matters, why even bother?
Edit: I understand the downvotes, for sure. But that’s what the article said, and if anyone thinks Ukraine will still be around in 2027 unless this **stops**, they’re deluding themselves. Our countries should be doing everything and anything required to keep Germany heated, starting several months ago. There’s no way that should take 5 years with the weight of the world behind it.
Looks like Russia is helping speed up Europe’s carbon emission milestones. Generous of them!
So it begins…
So the the turbine that Germany gave did nothing? Germany might soon have to come to terms that russia isn’t going to co-operate and try to minimise the damages from the cut off.its clear Russia is reducing or even cutting the supply
I guess the Russian governmnet will bankrupt Gazprom and nullify any of its liabilities, only to remake it into Promgaz, a clean-slate state-owned company.
If we’d responded sensibly to the outbreak of war, we could’ve gotten started on a mass European migration to heat pumps for residential heating by now, which we’re going to need to do anyway if we’re to have a hope in hell of reaching net zero. Instead, Europe has pissed months away wringing its hands in full Micawber mode hoping that something will turn up.
So it has begun.Ukraine needs to counter attack and do it fast. They need to atleast reclaim kherson before the winter.
Public opinion in support of this war will shift over the coming months(yes reddit is not real life). This will give pro russia european politicians any excuse to make some form of treaty with russia.( Even here it has become tabbo to say “support ukraine” within the republican party base atleast. Conspiracy theories are rife that this is some gLoBaLiSt fUnDeD wAr. Guess what? They will most certainly win the upcoming midterms. )
If the treaty happens you can say goodbye to eastern and a good chunk of southern ukraine forever. Russia will learn from its mistakes and will attack again in 5 years. Time is of the essence
