Legal Systems

  1. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scandinavian law or Nordic law is considered related to German Civil Law, but there are a few differences.

“Scandinavian law, with a foundation of its customary laws, is pliable and less authoritarian than other European legal systems as it is relatively less restrictive. The laws focus greatly on rules, principles and precedents that have developed in practice, especially in courts. Further, most laws are judge-made, and as the principle of stare decisis does not apply, the courts are open to reflect ever-changing social conditions.”

  2. I do think we’re excluding some less well-known exceptions. Like the special family law allowed for members of the Thracian Muslim Minority in Greece.

  3. Yeah Lebanon is only like 43% correct. Islamic law for marriages, divorces and so on applies for muslim only (there are laws for shiaa and another set of laws for sunnis). Catholic law with a maronite twist applies for maronite christians. Orthodox christian law applies for orthodox christians, and so on for every sect. Muslims cannot marry christians in Lebanon, so we go to Cyprus, get a civil marriage and certify it in Lebanon. So civil law is valid in Lebanon but there is no legitimate way to get it. It‘s… it‘s a mess.

  4. Ths is actually quite a fantastic map that does a tremendous job mapping a matrix of complex and overlapping legal systems clearly and concisely.

  5. This is probably the worst depictions of the Netherlands I’ve seen in a long time. Ignoring the fact that they filled up the IJsselmeer, this is pretty common on larger maps, they actually excluded Flevoland. For those not in the know, Flevoland is the 12th province of the Netherlands that was created by filling up a large section of the IJsselmeer. So the parts we actually left as water are completely filled up, but the one specific section we removed all the water from is still sea according to this map.

  6. It’s an anglocentric view that all other legal systems can just be grouped together, while your own deserves it’s own category.

  7. I once heard an English judge say:

“People always think their own law system is the best…except in England, once we saw what the Americans did with ours!”
