Started looking for a job as a data scientist in Helsinki while I was still living in Stockholm, Sweden. The period is between december 2021 and june 2022. And I know this is not the prettiest Sankey diagram, so feel free to make fun of me for that.
Really impressive statistics. It’s great to be a data scientist these days.
3 offers is imo pretty good considering most of those rejected and ghosted ones were probably always going to be inner recruitment or otherwise pre-decided.
Could you share a bit about the process e.g. Did where did you find the job postings?
I prob have put about 25 applications this year with a bad CV but when I streamlined my info through linkedin and got rid of my picture in cv I’m finally getting more interview processes going. I wanna switch career to arts, I’m currently in IT, I don’t know what else interests me anymore.
If I was an employer in need of a data scientist, showing me this graph would get you hired
Nice work! This fits my current experience job hunting in Finland quite well as a software engineer. It’s nice to be in a place where I don’t have to send out over 100 applications just to get a call back.
I’m more curious about why a swede would move from the great kingdom of sweden to the backwater shithole of europe. Salary should be way lower, people grumpier, travel shitter and job opportunities certainly less. Must be because of love, only explanation. Welcome, anyway. Thank you for raising the average IQ of our nation.
my graph isn’t that interesting…
2015-2017 520 applications. 37 notices that they hired someone else. 1 request for me to submit a video interview. 482 ghosted.
and the specialist hired by TE to supervise my job hunt saying to me “well, you’ve done all you can. why not leave Finland?”
(yeah… that would have been the plan if my children didn’t live here :eyeroll: )
There could be one more category for rejections: The job posting gets re-posted.
I’ve had a couple of cases where I’ve applied for a job (with somewhat perfect match to what they require), hoping to hear from them and hear nothing. Then all of a sudden LinkedIn advertises to me the same position as a new one (I know it is because I save / print as PDF all the positions I’ve applied). No idea why they do that. Would be great to know what’s wrong with my “perfect” application but looks like they decided to hire nobody and reposts the position…
Interesting! I just got a data scientist role in Finland. Applied for one job and got it. But, I was pretty much a perfect fit for the job. I’ve noticed a lot of the data science postings are actually looking for data engineers
3 offers after only 24 applications? God I wish that were me
What made you decide to move to Finland? If you don’t mind me asking
Välkommen!
Got rejected after a third interview? Jeez what a company.
Sounds like a good way to show the number of girls I asked out to find the one I’m commited to today.
I am working as a data scientist myself, and I have similar experiences.
My experience was that small companies (startups) welcome foreigners, while large companies hate them, unless they are uber-specialists. Also everyone hates foreigners who live in other countries – I have spoken with one CEO, who told me that he gets 100+ CVs a day for his data scientist position, most from India, so he just throws everything out which is not Helsinki.
I am from Eastern Europe myself (Hungary out of all the places), but when I took the leap of faith and moved to Helsinki (first into an AirBNB), I have only applied to 10 places – 5 startups, 5 large companies. From the 5 startups, one I rejected before the first interview, one rejected me after the 1st round, one rejected me after the 2nd round, I got two offers, and one interview stopped because I took another offer.
Large companies just rejected me, without any explanantion.
Edit: I have sent wrong CV to two places, the empty template that I have used, I have sent them a correction email afterwards, and they both called me in for interview.
Do you mind sharing why such a decision though? Looking a Data Scientist job in Helsinki while in Sweden? Wondering as a Data Analyst working in Helsinki
