>Spend in London has historically been higher compared to other English regions partly due to the fact that for many functions it is more expensive to provide services in the capital, due to higher staff and infrastructure costs.
Is Hampshire SW or SE?
I’m in the midlands. Work in London. Big house but no A&E, buses run once a day (weird) and the takeaways are all pretty crap. The shops are all charity shops and cafes. I do like my London fix but I also like the house I have in the midlands.
When I’m in London I can see the money, everywhere. Even the little countdown things on the traffic lights for pedestrians, just screams money.
London is by far the most productive region in the UK. It costs about 3-5x to conduct any infrastructure work in London than the rest of the UK due to all sorts of factors like labour cost, transport costs and the headache with local authorities being useless in London.
The Southeast of England is also highly productive in comparison to the rest of the UK. Same with Scotland. It’s more important that these regions are adequately funded for the economy to function.
In fact, the Southeast and London get the worst deal when considering what these regions put into the economy.
Here’s England broken down to many, many small areas so you can compare. Here’s the rest of the UK as one big mega lump.
I’d be amazed if the figure isn’t very high for people living in the Highlands due to the distance they live from anything.
How the fuck is the South East so low down on the list when it’s one of the most expensive parts of the country? It has pockets of poverty I know (I grew up in one) but it’s still one of the most affluent parts of the country overall.
Now pull in tax revenue by region too and you’ll see who’s getting a good deal (i.e. not London)
One massive problem with these generalised graphs. They fail to account for population density.
Wales, Scotland and NI have lower populations per km2. Which skews any capital and maintenance infrastructure spend.
This shows Tories need to stop hating London 😑
The taxes which we pay are the same throughout the UK which means that Londoners receive a huge subsidy from their fellow citizens. On top of this people living outside London are also heavily subsidising citizens living in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. “Levelling Up” is a joke.
