Hi! I came across the MA course in Social Work at Esslingen University and I wanted to ask if anyone has experienced this course. I was wondering how good it is in terms of future job prospects in the Organizational / Corporate Social work field, or Community manager position, or in the Macro Social work field in general. I’m interested in your experience with this course, good or bad aspects of it. 🙂

Also, if anyone would be kind enough, it would help me a lot if I could get an overview of the general life there in terms of cost of housing (if we share or independent flat, condition of student dormitories?), cost of groceries per month, are there enough job opportunities in Esslingen itself or will I have travel to nearby cities/towns to find jobs/internships/volunteer opportunities? And any other info that you deem important for a foreign student to know would be very much appreciated 🙂 Thank you!

Ps. Here’s a small overview of the course in case someone hasn’t taken the course but still has knowledgable insights to share 🙂

  1. I lived in Esslingen for a couple years. It’s a beautiful stunning town, but relatively small. It’s close to stuttgart if you want to have more city feeling. But it is very expensive, as many rich people from stuttgart live there. I don’t know how much student housing they have, but you can move a bit outside of Esslingen (like ostfildern) to find a room.
You can work at the weekly market, grocery shops, restaurants etc, so finding a mini job should be easy.

  2. I don’t know anything about this course but I’m a social worker in Germany. I only have a bachelors degree and still got a management position. I have friends working in corporate social work, usually the condition is just having a masters degree in social work, doesn’t really matter which.

    Maybe this helps a bit.

  3. Esslingen is a nice medieval town and it’s close to Stuttgart, also the Hochschule is quite reputable (even though I can’t say much about Social Sciences, except for the fact that they have been thaught there for quite some time already).

Housing can be a nightmare in the Stuttgart region in general, but if you are early with application (via Studierendenwerk) your chances for student accomodation are not bad I guess. There are several student dorms, and since I guess Social Studies are on the hill top campus, living top side has the advantage that you don’t have to climb the hill every day – but there are also busses so it’s not that bad.

Getting a job in and around Stuttgart shouldn’t be too hard in my opinion.

  4. My ex girlfriend and multiple friends of her studied social work in Esslingen. All of them didn’t have any problem to find a good job afterwards as far as I know. Also with the course itself she and the other ones I know about were pretty satisfied. All in all never heard any complaints but only positive things about it.
If you want to ask some specific questions I can forward them.
