What’s the historical reason for using dashes (-) in domain names? I haven’t seen any other country do that (i.e n-tv.de). Found this picture online which also uses dashes in street names, ate the reasons related?

Grammar and spelling rules. Names of institutions that incorporate the name of a person have to be hyphenated.

It is the only legal spacing character in domain names to this day.
Generally it is an old school way to space domains, but fell out of favor due to appearing spammy. N-tv is using it due to its brand name having a hyphon.
If the street is the several parts name of a persons or location the – is used.
Doesn’t matter if it’s a Straße, Weg or Platz.
Albert-Einstein-Straße, Alber-Einstein-Weg, Berliner-Tor-Platz,
There a grammatic rules on how street names are written.
Also if you wirte it together or separate.
Kreuzweg, Am Friedhof, Berliner Straße, Dorfplatz
It’s called grammar.
Let me give you an answer worthy the question:
Domain names where defined around 1912 as per DIN ISO 4711 when the German Emperor had declared dashes to be used over spaces. Ever since we use dashes in Town names, street addresses, first names, family names, eMails, Websites and Street signs. Hope this helps.
