This is the second consecutive census recording a decline of population, which had increased in every census since 1838:
2021: 10,432,481
2011: 10,816,286
2001: 10,964,020
1991: 10,259,900
1981: 9,740,417
1971: 8,768,641
1961: 8,388,553
1951: 7,632,801
More than half the country lives in the regions of Attica (Capital: Athens) and Central Macedonia (Capital: Thessaloniki), which have a population of 3.8 and 1.8 million respectively. Only one of Greece’s 13 regions (South Aegean) posted a population increase in 2021 vs 2011.
