  1. When I was much younger, I (like many boys my age) fantasized about being a great soldier /war hero/whatever. Upon seeing the opening to Saving Private Ryan, I realized I was much more likely to be the guy dying in the sand than the guy who makes it to the end.

  2. Is the bit of paper tied round his neck something that they all wore (some sort of paper dog tags) or something added after he died (maybe recording place of death)?

  3. rest in power, antifascist solidarity. i am so honored by the sacrifice these people made to liberate Europe from fascist reign. my country still remembers these fallen every year with two minutes of silence.

  4. Is this the guy that just keeps farming karma on this sub by posting random WW2 pictures?

    What a fucking weirdo

  5. What’s the card hanging around his neck for? Personal details, blood type and suchlike? Or was it something placed on him after death?

  6. A very sad sight. The americans had very few casulties on Utah but that didnt helped this chap.
Must have been horrible to be shipped of to the beach, the Landing on Utah was started after the first wave landed on Omaha and the Soldiers in the Boats on their way to Utah could see the slaughter of the first wave on Omaha.
