As a non-Irish visiting the sub this week

  1. Short version: Today is the 12th of July, it’s a big thing for Protestants in Northern Ireland. They like to build massive bonfires from pallets and various bits of ‘republican’ stuff like tricolours and election posters for republican parties and set them on fire.

One lad fell off one the other day while building it and died. Houses are often in danger from the fires.

    It’s sectarianism

  2. People of British/Protestant/Unionist background in the North celebrate on the 12th of July to celebrate the Protestant King William of Orange’s victory over the Catholic King James II in the battle of the Boyne.

It essentially resulted in ensuring Protestant rule in Britain and Ireland for centuries which in turn cemented the position of the Protestant settlers in Ulster.

They celebrate this by erecting large bonfires which they light on the 12th.

All of that would be fine, but many tend to focus on the defeat of the Catholics element and so they use the holiday to put the Catholics in their place. This is why they tend to adorn their bonfires in Irish flags and symbolism.

They also tend to have marching bands and they used to (not sure if they still do) march through Catholic neighbourhoods to show who’s boss and to internationally antagonise Catholics so they could play the victim card when attacked.

  3. It’s all part of a long con.

Gerry Adams and Mary Lou started a Pallet selling company together about 10 years ago under the radar.

Since then, they’ve been goading the hardcore Unionists yearly and sending them messages about their crap little bonfires.

So now you have Unionists building massively unsafe structures, (in some cases falling off them and dying), setting dangerous large fires right in the center of their communities, spending loads of money buying tricolors & Celtic jerseys and other “republican based items” to burn, and all the time convinced that they are somehow sticking it to the filthy Taigs by forcing their own children to inhale massive amounts of toxic fumes from pressure treated wood.

  4. Would you like a pallet? I have a couple out the back.

    50 euro for normal people.

500 for those that want to burn it today for “culture” reasons.

  5. Today is the day St. Patrick hunted all the pallets out of Ireland. As a result, Ireland has no pallets and hasn’t for centuries so we have to import them (into Belfast, in the North) so we can burn them to celebrate our 400 hundred years of being pallet free.

  6. It’s for the unionist celebrations in the North. Every year on July 11th, unionists have bonfires to celebrate William of Oranges invasion of Ireland where they burn things considered republican/Irish.

  7. Some Northern Unionists have nothing going on in their life so they like to build a big fire every year to pretend their life has meaning.

  8. Basically a bunch of inbred racist Neanderthals rekindle their love of hatred every year by burning bonfires with flegs, pictures and effigies of people they dont like. Its the equivalent of the KKK burning crosses.

  9. Eventually they will wake up & realise that their lack of education/ingrained small-minded attitudes/bigotry has meant that they are the underclass that they are. They may also realise that it has been their politicians have sold them a pup for generations- a status quo that has been acceptable for them thus far but new generations will want improvement & won’t want their children to be on a downward trajectory. Hate will only get you so far – eventually love for your children will compel you to improve your & their lot.

  10. sure if it didn’t happen, we’d be deprived of something to complain about, so i think a part of me would be disappointed if they stopped doing it

  11. It’s a bunch if fuckwits, who every 12th July, celebrate colonisation of Northern Ireland (there’s a whole history there about the Battle of the Boyne etc) and even though NOBODY likes them (even the Brits, that they so passionately brown nose, have no interest in them and find it kind of embarrassing) they continue to have their stupid parade every 12th July. They celebrate by building giant bonfires and decorating them with effigies of whatever Sinn Fein/Catholic priest they hate that year and burn it. It’s basically neanderthal behaviour, nobody gives a fuck about them, they hate Ireland but continue to live on our island, parading and cheering for one event that happened over 300 years ago. It’s embarrassing. It’s our version of the KKK Lads in the US Parading about with their tiki torches and bootstrap boots.
