Apparently there is a ‘Madeira First’ party. Can anyone explain it because although I am Madeiran, I was born in London and know nothing about it.

  1. Think the title should have been “3rd most voted party” as the current one is misleading, non-portuguese won’t have an idea who PS and PSD are…

  2. ITT: No one actually answering the OP’s question, prefering to “REEEEEEEE! U NOT NATIVE BRUV!”

Sorry OP wish i could help you but i don’t know anything about the party. My guess it’s another “protest vote” regionalist party.

  3. Então se eu tiver pais portugueses mas nascer na República Dominicana porque a minha mãe estava de férias, eu sou dominicana? Lol, a vossa lógica

  4. IDK how much you know about Madeira but I assume you are talking about “Madeira First” Coalition, composed by PSD (Liberal Conservatives) and CDS (Christians Democrats). Madeira is an autonomous region with their own government and contrary to Açores it kinda trends to be more aggro for independence. They always had more controversies over independence and far right separatists action (Search for: FLAMA), controversial figure namely Alberto João Jardim, a populist who was confrontational with the Republic Governance. The Island developed a lot mainly with EU cohesion packs, with Jardim normally claims all the glory, despite plugging Portugal into fiscal strains because of overspending and not reporting it debt to the central bank, in effect increasing Portugal economical stress during its financial crisis, which by Portugal it was a unique case. (https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052970204831304576594881824698282 ) he used the homeland as scapegoat several times, so whether or not independence is beneficial remains a open question.

Portugal does have a problem of centralization but it’s not unique to Madeira, as most of the center and interior of the continental region is neglected by the government, hence voting going to Far-left and Far-Right parties as they see hope in them. In the case of Madeira they argue that the Republic is pushing Madeira back and that independence may be a better option for more freedom, Miguel Albuquerque the current president of the region doesn’t seem to be most unitarian. Hence the all Madeira First motto.

In map it shows Chega, who are a Far-Right Nationalist Party, recent years they did rise, going from 1 MP in 2019 to 12 in 2022, following the trend of the rising far right nationalism in Iberia and the Mediterranean. They are align to ID European politcal party group.

  5. Damn, I only had patience to read other people’s replies now and damn, pessoal calma lá, não é preciso moer o OP vivo🤣
