  1. >Mr Griffin, who is Deputy Government Chief Whip, said he was putting the proposal out there so urban people in the constituency would know what it feels like to be on the receiving end of “hare-brained proposals”

I think it’s a good idea and I live in DBS.

It would also be very funny, which is just as, if not more, important.

  2. Can we ban those ford raptors too? No reason why anyone should own it.

Cousin got one and pays feck all tax as it’s a “work car” that just looks cool and isn’t useful as a van for tools.

Lets get the debate on personal maximum car size, it’s an American influence that we need to get rid of.

  3. That’s actually hilarious. You can’t bully your way through traffic when you’re at the same eye level lol

  4. Love it. Defining an SUV in legislation could be tricky though. Weight is being considered as the parameter which would also catch a bunch of electric vehicles which are v v heavy.

  5. Singling out a particular category which has wildly different definitions depending on who you ask seems silly. If it’s to be done it should be a height/width/length limit. I don’t think we should be banning what some people might call an SUV but in reality is just a tall hatchback. This would also need to be full of exceptions for people who genuinely need larger vehicles, but you certainly don’t need a Range Rover to get to the shops.

It’s hilarious that he thinks this is a hair-brained proposal.

  6. I know he wasn’t being serious, but I absolutely think we should ban the sale of SUVs, not just in one constituency, but in the whole country.

There’s no legitimate reason to have one of those things. They use more fuel and resources, take up more space (on roads and in parking), are more dangerous if they are involved in collisions (especially to children), are heavier and so cause more wear-and-tear on infrastructure, and… honestly, tend to be driven by people who can’t drive well and think a huge car will cover their deficiencies.

I can think of legitimate reasons to have other kinds of large cars, such as a jeep (e.g. for farmers or builders), but there’s nothing an SUV can do that a smaller car can’t. People using cite large families, but a) you can fit a lot of people in smaller cars and b) most people I see driving SUVs don’t have them fully occupied.

Defining what exactly an SUV is would be tricky, though. I don’t think “monstrously over-sized vehicle” would hold up in a court of law, but we could certainly have a definition based on size and fuel consumption.

Also, I don’t think electric SUVs should get a pass. Those would eliminate a lot of the fuel aspect (though not all, as they’d still need more electricity than normal cars), but wouldn’t address the other issues.

  7. He means it in an outrageous “Modest Proposal” sense but I support it unironically. SUVs are a fuckin’ plague. Rich people dominating the street and putting their own comfort and safety above everyone else including the vehicles they can crush and the pedestrians they can wipe out without noticing. That’s before we even touch the environmental concerns.

  8. He might be surprised to find a level of support for this, even among people living in the area.

You’ll often find people complaining about the state of public transport in Ireland (not without cause) but there are parts of Dublin with excellent public transport.I worked in an office once with an underground car park, and the amount of people who drove in,despite the traffic, from their homes inside the M50 was quite surprising.Wouldn’t dream of getting a bus.

This lad is from Kerry. Home of the Healy-Raes. The rest of us know well what it feels like to be on the receiving end of hare-brained proposals from TDs there. Is there anyone in that county with sense?

  10. Saw one the other day, American style Ford and it came out about 2 or 3 feet into the road from the parking spot as it’s so unnecessarily large. It’s not needed.

  11. I love how this is supposed to be a gotcha at people from south dublin, but so many people here are utterly sick of the amount of SUVs that they actually think it’s a good idea.

  12. He’s banning Scum Under Varadkar, from Dublin Bay South.

When Leaky McSpinface is back as Teasock those earning less than 40k are banned from DBS.

  13. A lot gets made of how Dublin Green TDs are out of touch with the rural west of Ireland. But I think that many rural politicians are just as out of touch with Dublin. I think that a vast majority of Dubliners would support his proposal unironically.

  14. Please please please PLEASE – if any TDs or county councillors are reading this, this would be an instant vote getter. Most people can’t stand these vehicles – they are a danger to other road users and the environment.
