Ireland is now the highest ranked Men’s Rugby team in the world

  1. Doesn’t mean shit if you dont back it up in the world cup next year. And we have to play nz or france in the qf where we could come undone

  2. Were we not number 1 going into the last World Cup? The ranking to me means very little. It’s nice to see us at the top compared to years ago but it’s still the day to day performance we should look at.

  3. The sad thing is Ireland will probably lose against france/new Zealand in quarter final and the trolls will have a field day.

  4. The current top 4 teams are all on the same side of the draw in the RWC so two of them at least will be out in the QFs. There’s no guarantee on any given day we’d beat any of SA, NZ or France, even if we played to the peak of our abilities. It is going to be a very, very tough ask.

We should have a good crack at the 6N next season because we have both France and England in Dublin, and we’re undoubtedly better than Wales, Scotland and Italy as things stand.

Winning the test series in NZ is one of the biggest achievements of any Irish sports team though and breaking 90 ranking points is a nice milestone, but ultimately, being #1, #2, #3 or whatever right now doesn’t really matter I doubt the squad are getting too carried away with it.

  5. Sadly World Rugby are a load of disorganised muppets who plan the RWC 3 years beforehand, so now the 4 top teams in the world are in 2 pools, leading to the same quarter finals. Worth mentionning as well that theres quite a gap between the top 4 and the others, but of a joke really. England getting an easy pass once again.

  6. If you really believe your rugby team has a chance against France nowadays…

These rankings are usually trash. Same goes for FIFA’s rankings.

  7. The rest of the world giving the Irish fans false hope before the World Cup quarter finals tie against Namibia

  8. Rugby in the context of global or world rankings never seems that impactful to me. I can only think of 9 maybe 10 countries that play it in any significant ranking
