I just remember the case of a drunk driver in Geneva killing people and getting no punishment. And now I see this.
Why are alcoholic people so well treated in our justice system? Can I drink alcohol and do whatever I want? I’m not happy with this.

Solely punishing citizen for their actions is no longer the end game of the justice system.
There are little elements given on the article to assess what’s the state of that mother, except for the fact that she was deemed as irresponsible for her actions from the first death on. From what I can gather, she was already seeking help for her condition before the second manslaughter, which probably means she was seen as cooperative and involved in her betterment.
Overall, putting people into jail is quite useless, except for the fact they are removed from society for some time. That said, once they get out, not much has been resolved. So to me, it is clear that this woman with such mental issue and an alcohol dependency would be much better off in a medicalized environment, tightly handled by physician than just rotting in jail cell.
Another aspect is that often, when the author of an infraction is devastated by a situation, the court tend to estimate that they are punished enough by life events. The focus is turn into solving problem at their root cause and then in reinsertion.

She lost two kids, isn’t that a big enough punishment? And yes, mental illness is a thing. She needs a serious treatment ASAP, not some jail time which will do no good for both her or society. We need to get out of the boomer logic.
