The media will go demon mode on this and make the public hate train drivers so they don’t see that if they too unionise they can fight for better pay and working conditions.
Good for them! We should all unionise
Pay them then
I stand in solidarity with anyone striking in this country. It’s a brave move in this country.
The Railway industry has been a joke for a while, anything promoting people to rise up and demand change should be supported.
Great to hear, full support of them. I truly wish more industries that’re getting destroyed by austerity would rise up to strike
People too, for too long we’ve been thrown what’s left of the crumbs (if we’re lucky) from the conservative government. We need people who can stand strong in the face of opposition and demand a better country, better pay and a better environment.
I’m a train driver and I voted for these strikes. Whatever you think about trade unions, it’s undeniable that when workers unite they have a lot of power over establishments. The rail unions have made their members safer, better paid with better terms and defend them in disputes.
Can you imagine the impact if the customer service sector organised across the supermarkets and voted to strike? Train drivers are setting a great example here
We might have the technology to automate the routine driving task, but we’re decades away from having the signalling infrastructure to support a widespread implementation of even just that.
*Edit: just for clarity, as I was wondering where this had disappeared to, it was intended as a reply to another comment. I’ll leave it here as it is, as it’s an important point, just one without much context!*
But they earn good money therefore they should take a 50% pay cut or something. Can’t have anyone earning more money except business excecs.
Erode all our salaries please

Great news, more power to them! Hopefully more industries that can take action do. And ones that don’t start to organise.
The same day as my graduation which I need to get a train to 🙁
Not the end of the world. There are alternatives and I believe in their right to strike.
fair play to them, hope they get what they’re asking for
It’s so disheartening seeing the comments on threads like this. It’s completely understandable to be jealous, or annoyed that some groups have the ability to do this, and fight for what’s right. That doesn’t make them overpaid, or lazy or selfish.
Companies spend millions and millions of £ to try to stop their staff from unionising, why do you think that is? Because they will save so much more being able to pick off staff one at a time when it comes to pay and conditions.
Seeing unions in action should make us push for that as the norm in our society, at least while it’s run by corporations.
So most peoples aversion to this is the fact the salary is 60k and more than 90% of the population.
Could the issue infact be that pay is this country has stood still and you’re all being exploited?
The pay floor in this country needs to be higher, people at the top 1% of earnings are laughing at you frothing at the mouth fighting over scraps
I see the point that workers being strangled while shareholder profits remain spectacular is ridiculous. But part of me just assumes the full cost of a pay rise will get passed along to the consumer, leading to more expensive train tickets rather than reduced shareholder profits. Is there anything to prevent them just passing the cost straight onto the ticket price?
And what choice do we have but to pay up anyway? Take the alternative, competing railway to work?
People always go on about how well train drivers are paid. At some point the penny will drop that it’s because they are unionised and strike for better pay. Would should anyone accept a decrease in living standards when the richest at the top aren’t?
No one can blame the train drivers. When you are inconvenienced by this, remember: it’s those at the very top your anger lies with. They are the cause of any disruptions.
If a job has the power to cripple a city, we should pay them well because their job is *important*.
Good. The more industrial action the better. Grind the economy to a fucking halt until the evil cunts in charge hurt.
Good for them.
More people should be striking for better wages. Train drivers may be paid significantly more than many but that’s because they have a strong union.
Them asking for a raise isnt something to be mad about, be mad at the multi-millionaires and especially the billionaires who horde the wealth their employees create.
Wages fall relative to inflation and cost of living yet the truly rich get richer.
Don’t let the rich trick us into bickering over scraps.
There were comments in this thread that made me think “actually, why can’t I be a train driver?” and go look up vacancies. Sadly I don’t think anyone is currently hiring for new trainees.
**July 31st:** BBC News: “*Train Driver Deliberately runs over blind puppy carrying flowers to sweet old white granny who fought in the Napoleonic Wars*”
Welp, I am arriving on 7/31 with planes to train it to Staffordshire and a few other places.. Guess my time there is fucked.

And as a union member, I support them.

Just bad timing. First trip I’ve taken since covid.
Pretty smart for them to choose the one day I decide to go on holiday.
its about time. I hope for more strikes in every sector, until the balance of wealth is more fairly adjusted 🙏✊
Striking good.
You’ve got plenty of warning it’s happening and it *needs* to happen.
Good! I hope the unions get a fair deal and it shows the rest of the country start punching up and demanding better pay and better conditions.
I hope they get the pay and conditions they’re fighting for. The last thing I want on a train is for the staff working to get me from A to B to be working in unsafe conditions, underpaid, possibly exhausted, when my safety and journey depends on them.
Have their salaries already increased with inflation in the last 20 years? Like is there a chart of salary increase versus inflation for each year? I’m curious whether it has been consistent or not.
Good. More people should be striking. Gotta prove a point to this shit hole of a government.
I’m travelling by train that day, I know how I feel about it all.
