if it was a work accident and you were officialy employed at the time of the accident it should be covered by your insurance. Please call Arbeiterkammer they are going to inform you about your rights and are going to help you trough the process of getting them.
AUVA covers all work accidents but only if they’re classified as such, so make sure that you tell the truth about what happened.
In any other case, if you were employed with normal insurance benefits, your insurance runs for another 6 weeks after termination of employment.
Edit after reading the other post: So you only passed Austria and had the accident here? And you never had any insurance that would cover the costs in another country?
That sounds really bad for you and i don’t think there’s anything you can expect to work.
As kind of a last resort, you can talk to the hospital, describe your situation and tell them you can’t pay the bill. There might be a way to delay or split payment, but it’s gonna be a mess in any case.
Sorry that this happened to you, but you also willingly took the risk driving through all of Europe without any insurance.
Were you employed in Austria or Croatia – if in Austria, contact the AK
And where did the accident happen?
Hello there croatian bro, it’s a shitty situation, but you will get out of it.
Please try to calm down and now let’s try to get you some help. Arbeiterkammer is an organisation that is directly tasked with the wellbeing of employees in Austria.

Try to contact them – [https://wien.arbeiterkammer.at/ueberuns/kontakt/index.html](https://wien.arbeiterkammer.at/ueberuns/kontakt/index.html)

Give them a call – pretty sure most of them speak english too.
Give them as much information as you can – let us know how it went.
Post this in the Netherlands subreddit. They know more, their work laws count.
Can they keep me in hostage or even dont let me across the border if i dont pay my medical bill?
I cant believe that your insurance does Not Cover this. Austria, the netherlands and croatia are all parts of the EU, so this should no big Deal in my opinion.
What I do Not understand: why are you insured in croatia? Working in the netherlands should usually result in an insurance from there..
At least in Austrian law your health insurance would still cover the cost, for a couple of weeks even after your employment. Also once you are registered unemployed, in Austria you would have health insurance.
I would imagine the law in the Netherlands is similar. But honestly I don’t know the details.
if you are working for a compny in the netherlands, you have assurance there. if it was a car accident WHILE on a work trip in austria, it is obviously a work accident; but you have to contact netherlands for it.
and dont worry, you will not have to pay now, and you can also leave the country. you are in a hospital, not in a prison
So there is a lot of misunderstanding so let me oversimplify this: I dont have EHIC im from Croatia and my medical bill is 20k euros in Austria how can i solve this ASAP?
working in the Austrian health care system: As far as I can tell you’ve worked in the Netherlands so your health insurance company should cover the accident (or at least the costs they would cover in the Netherlands). I also don’t believe just getting fired will end the health insurance – in Austria you got at least six weeks of protection for medical issues.

Also you should got the European Health Insurance Card:

get a new job!
A croat from Austria here.
I’d say first calm down, don’t panic, and take things step by step, being open to any officials.
This is all EU, and no matter what kind of crappy contracts you might be used to from “back home”, this won’t fly in NL or AT.
You said your health insurance covers EU, so that’s it. All the “fired after the accident” doesn’t matter. At the time of the accident, you were both employed and had a health insurance.
Them cutting it after not only does not matter (they still have to pay) but imho also likely opens them up for a lawsuit. Talk to “arbeitskammer” in NL and AT and see what they say.
Also maybe talk to a lawyer from NL, you can probably get a compensation for being fired like this (if not even forcing them to reinstate you, saw it happen a few times when people got fired for such BS reasons).
Talk to AK, talk to a lawyer.
You’re not in trouble. They are 😉
who was at fault for the car accident? if it wasnt you the others car liability should cover it.
