>Using a National Library of Scotland OS First Edition map of the area produced in 1886, tree expert Rob McBride estimated the tree to be about 400 years old.
>But National Highways, which is dualling the A303, claimed it was between 50 and 100 years old
Interesting (as in, National Highways are clearly lying).
My partner is a forester and I just leaned over, showed him a picture of the tree, and asked him to give a rough estimation of its age. He came back with between 400 to 600 years old.
He commented that the fact that it was sat in the middle of a field isolated from other trees (no competition) was a good indicator of its advanced age, because oak trees will typically prioritise branch growth before growing its height, and this one is very tall.
“We only cut back or fell trees where …. it is necessary to allow us to improve journeys.”
So anything that gets in the way.
Destroying something everyone can enjoy so a privileged group can have more comfort and convenience. Yup sounds like all society to me.
I’m no expert, but surely the fact it’s on a map that’s 130 years old demonstrates it’s older than 100 years old?
Protesting a road rather than rail infrastructure? Maybe they’re beginning to wake up!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, they need to fuck this stupid dualling idea off at the high port and plant a fucking hedge, that’s all it would take to stop your average braindead oaf from slowing right down to take photos of the stones.
