It’s advantage Penny Mordaunt in the race to become next prime minister, according to polling for i which suggests the general public and Conservative voters would prefer her in No 10 over Rishi Sunak or Liz Truss.
The voters are now becoming more familiar with the candidates, according to the Redfield&Wilton survey.
So what that means is people are now beginning to feel that they are able to make some judgments. And what is significant is how those judgments seem to be coming out.
When looking at whether voters support or oppose a contender to be prime minister, the striking thing is Ms Mordaunt comes out on top with a positive rating of +14, Mr Sunak has a negative rating of -16, and Ms Truss -8.
What appears to happen within those figures is Ms Mordaunt still has a large number of people that don’t know about her.
But those that do appear to be breaking on a distinctly positive path and voters are clearly giving her the benefit of the doubt.
Whereas with Mr Sunak, people have a view and it is negative. That may be because, as former chancellor, he is associated with being in Boris Johnson’s Government.
Ms Truss has got a negative rating and people do think they know a reasonable amount about her, enough to comment.
The likelihood is looking at the figures, therefore, that given what’s happened so far, as more people develop a view about Ms Mordaunt, she will increase that lead by her positive rating probably rising further.
That will almost certainly be why Ms Mordaunt has been subjected to the very strong negative briefing in the last 24 hours.
Because the campaign teams will be picking up both polling advice such as this, but also a consciousness that she is clearly now the person to beat.
It is now in Mr Sunak and Ms Truss’s interests to keep Ms Mordaunt out of the final two.

Well I liked her best when she had her mouth shut in yesterday’s debate, Mordaunt had an absolute mare.
I’ll assume they didn’t see last night’s debate then. Looked almost comatose when not speaking, and bored by herself when she did.
Penny Dormant.
Are we talking about the public here?
If so it’s completely irrelevant what the we think of her as we are not in a position to influence what ostensibly is an election to high office behind closed doors.
Tories will do what Tories do – and it has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of us. They could chose to elect a tub of lard or the fictional character of Gollum to lead the country for the next 18 months if they wanted to. There is nothing at all we can do to stop them.
Mordaunt looked like she didn’t want to be at that debate.
These articles are written as if we have a choice/influence and should therefore be interested. It’s not I’m a celebrity, there’s no phone vote mate.
