London bus driver says he ‘locks the doors’ and checks nobody has ‘stolen the tyres’ while in Croydon

  1. I was in a pub in Croydon not long ago, door opened and someone chucked a petrol bomb in, one of the locals picked it up and drunk it.

  2. The town centre and the shopping centre used to be great for shopping for things you didn’t find locally. It was also just a short train journey from Battersea, as much choice as in central London, but at lower price. That was almost 20 years ago. Sad to hear it’s gone down the drain.

  3. Croydon by birth, there are far worse and more crime riddled places in london than the Cronx. However everyone loves to talk us down and we have an unwavering home town pride despite the obvious numerous flaws!

  4. Got ID to go in the Spoons in Croydon. Home boy not only quizzed me on my date of birth to make sure it matched but checked I knew my starsign too. Roadmen not into astrology I guess.

  5. Dunno what it’s like now but 2000 to 2003 Finsbury Park was pretty rough. Regularly saw bins on fire so people on the street weren’t freezing.

  6. Growing up in and around Croydon from the early 2000s to mid 2010s was rough.

Shopping in the town centre was okay but there were parts you tried to avoid and you certainly never went at night (until box park opened).

The biggest problem with the town was that for decades there were ‘plans’ to revitalise the town and spend millions giving it an upgrade and face lift, but every time it either fell through before it could get started or died early on.

Croydon could be a great place to live if they had a more competent council, significantly more funding for social services, the police, public services (in general) and spend the money that was needed to improve the town from the ground up.

Too much is wrong to fix it incrementally but the cost is too high for any council to set out to actually do something about it.

  7. I lived in Croydon for just over five years and never had a problem. It gets a bad rep but it’s not as bad as people make out. I’ve had way more trouble in “better” parts of London.

  8. Used to work in a shop in Bromley. Got asked to cover few shifts in the branch in Croydon. Second shift, a guy came in, dropped his trousers and just took a nice long piss on the floor then walked out.

  9. Worked in Croydon for a few months (a week a month) a few years ago. Some parts were undesirable, like any place.

What I will say is there were some fantastic restaurants.

  10. When I was eighteen (which was a good while ago now to be fair) I was struck repeatedly over the head with baseball bats in the neighbouring borough of Bromley.

It did however turn out that the scallywags responsible were from New Addington which to my mind is the Croydon of Croydon*.

*but then I am a little biased.

  11. I’ve lived all over London and have been fine. In Croydon however, a bloke threatened to stab me whilst pushing my pram for “looking at him” after I caught him selling drugs in the baby changing room in the shopping centre.

  12. It’s shit but I doubt it is any more special than loads of other deprived areas in major cities. You’ll find drivers in parts of Manchester and Liverpool that say the same thing.
