Tons of plastic waste put in UK recycling bins illegally dumped and burnt in Turkey

  1. None of the items mentioned in the article are recyclable in my local government’s area.

They recycle plastics, that are bottle shaped. Any other sort of plastic, soft ones, yoghurt pots, fruit trays, yoghurt pots etc, are un-recyclable apparently. There’s also no food waste collection. We need consistency across the country.

They shouldn’t be shocked. Not being aware of the amount of waste that escapes their recycling streams either means they’re idiots or incompetent.

  2. “Recycling” plastic is such a scam. Most of it, such as films, can’t be recycled anyway.

Ultimately it’s just a cost we are dumping on some poorer country to deal with. Plastic packaging should be taxed at a rate that covers the cost of collection and appropriate disposal.
That way manufacturers either choose a more recyclable packaging (aluminium/paper etc.) Or they have paid for the waste to be disposed of locally and not just dumped into the environment.

This illegal dumping in poorer countries has been going on for decades and is a well established practice. Anyone in significant power knows this is how waste is disposed of. People have just turned a blind eye to it because they can get away with it.

  3. This what you get when services that should be public are sold to the lowest bidder. A race to the bottom in search of profits, instead of a not for profit, decent service.

  4. Can be legally burnt at incinerators in the UK. Why waste the carbon shipping to Turkey. I’ve seen the recycling trucks piling up at the Bermondsey incinerator.

  5. Curry’s etc backdoored their faulty goods off to Africa to be burned and stripped. Nothing new here.
