Wonder will there be big ugly metal barriers blocking off most of the street for some bizarre reason like the last time.

Embarrassing really. Either it’s a vital thoroughfare, or it isn’t. Serious cities don’t behave like this. Have some courage and just pedestrianise it permanently.
I don’t think they can pedestrianise it. It’s a main artery for road travel from north to south of the city and used by a shed load of buses
