School fines dad £120 after kids go on holiday – but he had no idea they’d gone

  1. All the stuff about him being a “single dad of two” who struggling to raise his kids with the cost of living crisis in the article.. yet they left the country for six weeks and he claims he didn’t know? Something doesn’t add up.

  2. 1. Describes himself as a single Dad
    2. Blames the school for fining him for having parental responsibility
    3. Supposedly wasn’t aware his children were going on a 6 week holiday

By all means his ex-partner could have kept this a secret from him, but from the fact he’s not blaming her in the slightest (and further contests not knowing the rules of the school), why isn’t his issue with the partner?

He’s either an idiot or making shit up.

  3. It’s a fucking ridiculous ~~tax~~ fine for adults to pay, but that said, anyone with kids knows that both parents have to cough up per child. Also, he’s moaning the school is making him pay the fine when it’s actually the local council (might be county).

I’ve actually never met a head teacher who cared for the rule but their hands are tied. Personally I think any child pre year 10 should be able to miss out on up to two weeks of school per (school) year. If they can’t because it would screw over their college / university chances then we have much bigger issues with our education system. *rant over*

  4. He must be an absolutely useless dad if he didn’t even realise his kids were gone for 6 weeks.

OK. They don’t live with you, but surely you call? Visit? They spend some weekends with you?

In any other case I’d be suggesting that he get onto a solicitor about getting a family court order to prevent his partner from abducting his kids, but he doesn’t seem fussed…

  5. I hate to do this on Reddit but could anyone please bum me £9 for a block of Lurpak? This must be the kind of guy those avocado toast money-saving tips are aimed at.

  6. They always tried to fine my dad as well about my poor attendance, he just ignored the school, never paid the fines, and never turned up for meeting when they called him in. They stopped sending letters when I left school in 2007, I think this is just a tax for the school.

  7. > “I’m a single dad struggling to survive”

Unless you’re the kind of deadbeat who’s spending less than £10 a week on each of your kids, having them taken away from you for six weeks is going to be a cost saving.

This bloke doesn’t seem to be annoyed at being deprived of access to his kids for six weeks (despite allegedly being a single parent). He only seems to be annoyed at the fine.

  8. Funny how we’ve gone from teachers demanding schools are shut down for two years, back to fining parents because missing one day of school will destroy their entire education.
