12 hour shifts, driving all over, working with potentially dangerous animals… for minimum wage? Lord above

  1. I originally studied zoology solely to fulfil a lifelong dream of being a zookeeper. Bring a little older and wiser eventually pushed me away from this career path for reasons of low pay and extremely long hours. Seeing adverts like this just reaffirms those thoughts

  2. Christ, that’s shocking. The entry level pay where I work is nothing to write home about but we just hired someone straight out of leaving cert to be a general helper which is mostly washing glassware and the pay for that is better than this.

  3. If the boss of this “zoo” is reading this. Be a proper employer and pay it forward. Sounds like this job is a managerial-level job and requires commensurate pay and while I amn’t an expert in this particularly field, I know that a tenner an hour isn’t enough.

Given the location, the work required and the current cost of living crisis, I’d be looking at €34,000 salary + civil service travel expenses and training courses covered.

In return, you get a motivated educator with buy in to your project, who you can delegate responsibility to in order to make your own life easier, and the public will see that and won’t mind paying the entry fee when they come out more educated then they did before they went in, and the five star word of mouth reviews come rolling in along with a healthy bottom line and hopefully a few quid left for a bonus for your new “educator”.

  4. Work with snakes for 12 hours a day as the biggest snake (your new employer) takes the piss by paying you minimum wage. Lovely!

  5. I currently stock shelves in a SuperValu. It’s my first job I have no qualifications yet I have the same wages.

  6. Zoos should be phased out. If you want to see an animal then you should go visit it in its habitat. If they wanted to live in cages they’d have evolved to build their own.

  7. This is so shitty ..I’m a qualified social care worker and travelling an hour and home to work 12 hour shifts for 13 euro an hour ….The workload does not match the wage.

  8. Sad thing is this will be snapped up. As an animal lover I know that younger me would have been excited to apply. They know that aswel, they know people who love animals will do it for peanuts

  9. I’ve got a degree in Zoology. There will be a queue around the corner for this job. It’s something a lot of people are passionate about and a lot of people do for free through voluntary work. A paid position will have a feeding frenzy.

I fell into a different scientific discipline that actually pays a wage a person can live on though.

  10. The job market is fucked lads. The amount of “entry” level positions I’ve come across that REQUIRE 5-10 years experience in a field is mad.

  11. What do you expect when there’s probably 100 zoo keepers in Ireland and at minimum 400 students graduate with a degree in zoology every single year.

The thing about doing “exciting” or “passion” driven jobs is that there is way too much demand for the amount of openings.

I’m not saying this is a good thing , I’m just saying its not surprising. Some degree’s mean fuck all in the supply/demand fuelled jobs market.

Same thing happens for Journalists, Fashion & Art students its not good.

  12. People who want to do this get ripped off so badly, it’s one of those heart careers people go into wanting to work with animals… so will do anything, including getting shit pay.

  13. It’s an entry level job into a role many people would consider a ‘dream job’ (Zookeeper, experience/qualifications are listed as nice to have). They’ll have over 100 applicants while offering minimum wage, no incentive for them to offer more.

At the end of the day, we live in a wealthy country: the minimum wage should be high enough that someone working full time can have their basic needs met and live with dignity. It should not be a ‘disgrace’ to offer the minimum wage for a job that requires no experience or qualifications. The only ‘disgrace’ is If the minimum wage is too low to meet that standard – and if so the government should increase it.

  14. Animal care jobs are always woefully underpaid and they always attempt to justify it with the “you do it for the love of animals” attitude.

  15. Well if they can afford to have company events, they can afford to pay anything above fucking minimum wage. The fucking audacity

  16. I know a few kids who would love an opportunity like that as a way of starting their career in a niche field. It would make a nice apprenticeship if they were paying travel expenses and prepared to give someone with a love for animals but without a degree a chance.
