Yesterday I went to the Bugibba police station to report a theft, and as soon as I walked into the station, I felt like I was taken back to the 90s.

* The stairs on the way up to the station were all chipped and falling apart.

* They couldn’t play our CCTV footage because they didn’t have laptops or PCs with USBs. Not a single other TV screen in sight.

* Most windows had cracks in them.

* Floor tiles were something out at my Nanna’s house.

* Doors and benches were rickety and wooden.

On top of all of that, the whole thing was manned by just two police officers. At first I thought, “Well, to be fair this is Bugibba” – but then I remembered it’s the same in other places too[it’s the same in other localities too](https://timesofmalta.com/articles/view/police-union-demands-upgrades.923101).

I often used to lambast the police for their ineffectiveness and inefficiency at times but seeing the deplorable states they work in, I can see why it sometimes takes so long to get the job done. I cannot help but wonder whether this issue possibly drives away all the quality police officers.

  1. The 90s? Try the 80s. The government doesn’t give a shit about the regular citizen.

What it cares about are construction, free money to embezzle, and fining those evil tourists.

I went into one a few years back to ask if anyone had found my car’s license plate in a particularly bad flood. He tried to charge us a “fee for using his data” because the internet was down. The plate in was behind the desk.

    Such is Malta.

  2. any office state run and public facing is like that lets not get started on the level of service we have all come to expect from the “civil servants” occupying said offices.

  3. Such a shame, especially since in some towns (offhand I am thinking of Msida, sliema, Valletta, pieta) the buildings are really beautiful and should be maintained by virtue of their heritage value alone.

  4. Next time ask them to use their bathroom! You’ll be gobsmacked with its dire condition (all police stations are in similar conditions not just the one Buġibba)

The police force is not important for the government! They want the force to remain crippling and unable to deliver their job appropriately!

  5. The 2 main parties will always find a million euros for their favourite contractor to screw in a light bulb… but never to upgrade anything. Then if you say something the other half of the population call you negative. That is why malta is the way it is

  6. I guess this says a lot. The fact that their stations are a mess results in them being more demotivated to do their job. Most police have also felt powerless throughout the years in the face of injustice so they stop caring and bothering.

  7. It must be such a disheartening environment to go to work to everyday, and without taking into account the kind of work they do and what they deal with on a daily basis.

  8. The police is underfunded.

The Kink and his Muppets, as well as his Masters like it that way.

  9. Good. Waste of money anyways. Hope the theft report was for insurance. There will be absolutely zero effort on their part!
