Government working on scheme to allow Americans retire in Ireland

  1. What happens when they qualify for citizenship within 5 years and we’re responsible for their long term health care?

  2. Just screams terrible idea. So not surprised this is being designed by our current government. Horrible parasites

  3. You know what would really make the country better? A bunch of wealthy Trump supporting extreme Qanon right wingers drunk driving golf carts everywhere.

  4. So the original idea was a quid pro quo for Irish access to the e3 visa which would allow Irish people to get work visas for the US. It is currently near impossible to get a US work visa. This imo was a fair trade in terms of visas.

This seems to be offering the retirement scheme for americans but nothing in return for irish people? Only a good will jesture and hope their is some reform of visa schemes in the US. There hasnt been any immigration reform in the US for near on 30 years and because imigration is a partisan issue there likely wont be reform for many more years.
    Wtf!

Do FFFG even give a shit about irish people anymore?

  5. Program would allow ages 55 to 75. To work 20 hours a week. Voluntary work in some fashion as well as study and require private health insurance.

The amount of Americans that would actually be able to do this is incredibly small.

  6. Why American? What about the Canadian Newfoundlanders? Or Icelanders?
Theyre closer to us than ”Maerkis Gellahern.(Gallagher*)” Because you know theyre misspelling our names.

~~You ever see some family names in America and think theyre actually mispronounced and spelled incorrectly from EU names?*~~

  7. Ugh, I want them to abolish the “one grandparent” citizenship rule for the sole purpose of reducing the amount of Americans here. This won’t help.

  8. This sounds like the single most reliable method of making Ireland a worse place that I’ve ever heard of. Absolutely inspired. A detonated nuclear bomb would probably do less damage.

  9. The UK had a similar program they phased out about 20 years ago. Perhaps the Dáil should look into why they did that.

  10. Ahh great more competition for the scraps of housing we have, it’s almost like the current government dosent want to get reelected if that snap election materializes.

  11. if there’s one thing Ireland loves its pricing our own citizens out of living to pander to American interests.

  12. Id live to hear these dummies explain to me how this benefits us in the slightest.

We havr a retirment crisis, housing crisis and close to medical crisis.

And they want to bring in rich assholes using up the supply of all these already undersupplied resources.

It never ceases to amaze me how paddy irish will always bend over backwords for the whims ig europe and the us for fuck all in return.

  13. The yanks would love this actually and despite the moaning, I can’t think of a more harmless cohort we could bring in than some retired boomers who love Ireland a load!

  14. No, no no no no no no no no. Let them stay where they are in the country they ruined. We already have enough in this country without importing their brand of politics.

  15. American here who is living and working in Ireland. I absolutely do not want this to go through. There is an insane amount of baby boomers and if we allow them to come here to retire the housing market is going to get far worse. This would be a terrible thing for the country. Not to mention this generation in America is largely why america is such a mess today – you don’t want them here.

  16. It’s good to know the Government are focused on the hard issues.

Imagine them buying what little houses we have left and walking around like “I’m Aighrish”.

    Gone to the dogs.

  17. Is this similar to Portugal’s retirement scheme? The one that priced their own citizens out of retirement to pander to old couples?

  18. so some people are worried about trump supporters choosing to come to a county where we have

    * strict gun control
    * Universal healthcare & free gp care for children, and medical cards for the unemployed
    * Gay marriage and LGBTQ+ rights
    * abortion is available and pregnancy expenses are covered by the state & gay people can adopt
    * universal children’s allowance
    * subsidised college because and educated work force is an asset
    * employment laws that actually give workers rights

Lads and ladies i don’t think we have much to worry about.

And if they did come and experience the lack of school shooting’s, guards that don’t gun you down etc., they might even tell their friends and family back home!

  19. So the less-well-off young can more easily ~~fuck off~~ emigrate away from the housing crisis, and well-off rich old folk from the US can come to buy up local housing. The former lose their vote, the latter gain a vote after 5 years.

It’s a plan to sell off Ireland to the types of folk (well off finance industry folk) who have bought our politicians.

If we don’t get control of this a lot sooner than the end of the decade, then we’re not likely to be living in a proper democracy for long. The public have to start creating immediate personal consequences for politicians responsible for all of this – and not be waiting half a decade for elections etc..

  20. Of all the people you could get to the country, this is probably the worst of the lot:
    – older people take far more healthcare capacity.
    – they won’t work.
    – they’ll have enough money to buy up houses without doing any other contribution to the economy.
    – statistically conservative people. These are the people who voted for trump and are rejoicing roe overturning.

Do you really want these people settling here? Remember, they’ll start voting after 5 years too.

  21. Americans retirees coming to Ireland in their droves in their 50’s early 60’s as Irish people around the same age are told they are not retirement age and keep working if you want to live somewhat comfortably.

Housing crisis why don’t we import more people, but those who can afford to buy houses out right because fuck Irish people they’re just 2nd class citizens in their own country 🙄.
