For context, the Singapore population is 5.6m people with a land area of 728.6 km². Relative to Ireland of circa 5m people and 84,421 km². There are roughly 7600 people per km in Singapore compared to 60 people in Ireland. Yet we’ve managed to botch housing. I think there is a lot to be learnt from this video.

  1. I used to know a number of Singaporeans who were driven out of the country because it was literally impossible for them to stay, since they were single and thus excluded from most of the housing access. It’s part of why Australia has a significant Singaporean ex pat population.

Single includes all gays, btw, because same sex marriage is not recognised.

So it might be argued they didn’t so much solve their housing crisis as they ringfenced their housing and exported the houseless left over.

  2. Singapore doesnt allow foreigners kids into public schools since 2016.

That’s how they ‘solved’ the crisis.

  3. In Singapore all male offenders between the ages of 18 and 50 who has been certified to be in a fit state of health by a medical officer are liable to be caned. Any male convict, whether sentenced to caning or not, can be caned while in prison. The blows are applied with the full force of the jailer’s arm. When the rattan cane hits the bare buttocks, the skin disintegrates, leaving a white line and then a flow of blood. Men who have been caned have variously described the pain they experienced as “unbearable”, “excruciating”

The threshold for imprisonment is a lot lower than Ireland, e.g. possession of a small quantity of Cannabis is 10 years in prison.
