Yeah! but we can control our ~~fish~~, and our ~~borders~~, and our ~~PM~~, our new ~~PM~~, our ~~MSM~~, our ~~inflation~~,
our ~~cost of living~~, 🤡
thats a bizarre headline, its not explained (or mentioned) in the article, and the graphic shows us £2k lower than france and £4k lower than germany.
also, the data only goes up to 2018/2019, which is a little odd.
It’s almost as if Brexit is fucking us over or something. Surely not? Milk and honey anyone?
But are German passports blue?
>the top 10% of households in Britain were richer than those in many other European countries, middle-income British households were 9% poorer than their counterparts in France, while the poorest fifth of households in Britain were more than 20% poorer than their French and German equivalents.
This is something that annoys me about this sub sometimes, you get a lot of people on the top end of the earnings and yet still plead that they’re suffering, wasn’t a week ago I saw people complaining about earing 60-100k, sure the UK is more expensive but when the average person is on 31k or less (excluding London bringing that up) you quickly realise our poorest are worse off than a lot of the western world. We are saved massively by our NHS if we didn’t have that and had something closer to the US we’d be completely fucked, it’s a shame a lot of our country want to complain about what others get while also pleading poverty, it’s really annoying seeing some cunt with a BMW or a Tesla complain about the cost of living when they live in luxury compared to Britain’s bottom 20-40%, it’s sad that our culture still pushes us to all act like we’re a class above what we actually are and then look down on the people who we are actually in line with.
If you ever need to think about how privileged you are, just think about a few things
Have you ever lived in or been close to living in a council estate (even ex council bought houses estate)
Have you had to decide between two essentials for example eating or clothes?
Have you ever fallen back onto using loans, credit cards or overdrafts just to survive another week or month?
Have you looked at jobs offering the minimum wage or less and actually had to consider them, even do them?
If you say no to all of these, you’ve likely never struggled, not everyone suffers with each but I’m certain as someone who was Homeless for 2 and a bit years here in UK I can say that most people have experienced at least one of those and unfortunately our culture pushes people away from mixing with those on different socioeconomic backgrounds. It’s likely if you work at home or in an office job like most of the users here, you’re only going to know people who are In a similar position to you.
A country so enamoured with its past it voted to fuck up its future.
That’s the only brexit bonus you can and ever will be able to quantify.
Vote Tory to make the change.
Might be off topic but i noticed the currency exchange to other countries like Hong Kong is incredibly poor. They were in lockdown and still their economy doing better than ours.
£9k is the price of sunlit uplands.
Given euro’s tragic prospect that gap (assuming it’s true as in the article UK’s median hosuehold income is like 2000 lower, not 8k) would be closed soon enough.
I just can’t get my head around the figure from the graph. Median is the middle income? So if you right down every households income in the country then pick the one in the middle of the list or the middle two and divide by two.
The graph says median house hold income is €18,400 (£15,500). Minimum wage for a full time worker over 21 is £19000.
So the median house hold in the country has 1 adult working 32 hours a week in a minimum wage job? Or two adults working 16 hours a week each? Can this be right?
Am I mid understanding the figures?
I wonder how the comparison is for those in the top 0.1% of wealth in these economies.
I have a hunch though…
But growth is better than expected!! /s
Welcome to the United Shires of Britain. USB! USB!
Big part of it is that the French and Germans will stand up for themselfs against there Govs, in the UK we all sit around the pub slagging them off when in reality were push overs and do fuck all, next year is going to be even worse.
Just as comments are a bit focused on brexit.. throwing out there that the article is the summary of a 15 year trend and has no mention of brexit.
Not saying its great but shouldnt pin everything on it as it is not the only thing wrong with the Country
Wasn’t rocket science, you leave a regional trading block that is on your doorstep, you’re going to get royally fucked over time, they have no reason not to do so but somehow people were convinced of ‘British Exceptionalism’ which ran out a century ago. We had it good, really good, relative to the rest of Europe. They will siphon as much wealth out of the UK as possible.
It’s like a brexit echo chamber in here! Gdp has stabilised the last few years at the same rate as France and Germany, it seems to do with the goverment. Happy to be proven wrong I’m by no means an expert, call me out if I’m chatting bollocks
Sunlit uplands
In another timeline we’d have had chaos with Ed Miliband in 2015, a 2019 election with who knows in charge of the tories, and be in a far better position with all ouf our rights remaining.
But Red Ed’s commie policies like a fuel price cap would have probably screwed us. Thank god we avoided them.
I always get downvoted when I point out that brexit means being eventually poorer than Portugal.
But it’s true, and will happen fairly quickly.
Did you know? before decades of misrule, Chile was a rich country, at the beginning of the 2oth century.
Yeah,but that Blue Passport though.
We now have sovereignty and can make our own rules. Nobody has been able to say how this will help ordinary working people. But they’re very proud.
So it’s cheaper to live outside the UK *and* I can dodge paying off my student loans?
Colour me tempted.
It’s all those Brexit benefits.
> We are saved massively by our NHS
Don’t worry, that’s next on their list
From the guardian yes I believe you
Brexit Means Brexit.
Meh – it’s what they voted for, and what they’ll keep voting for.
But we have nice blue (black) passports so all is ok
Germany: “Hold my stein.”
Yes but we have our soverinity…
It’s called picking up the tab for damage caused by liars in Westminster and the media.
Sooo the £28k average is now only worth £20k or are we saying the average was £36k before? Or we should be earning £36k now? (Its it should be £36k) Because when were ignoring the depreciation of our money, its all brexit, unless were still pandering to pandemics where brexit didnt happen. Its like someone says the obvious and it gets forgotten about by the next think tank
And it looks like the Tories are going to make the man who had the keys to the coffers when the country plunged into a cost of living crisis in charge of everything! Morons
Amazing the way they can’t spell brexit.
Them foreigner best turn their banana boats around and stay in France or head to Germany then
The Times ran a story today about how the UK’s economic growth this month has confounded forecasts. I’m glad that articles like this exist to highlight exactly how meaningless “good news” stories of economic growth are for normal people.
Thank you Brexiteers. Your wisdom has helped us all
Then keep voting Tory
These sunlit uplands are feeling more like an uninhabitable desert at the moment.
At least we can look forward to more of the same or worse.
If we’ve learned anything from this mess it’s that you need to double down on your mistakes and really drive the self inflicted disadvantage home.
