That’s because he is Irish. He moved over there.
A lot of parts of Newfoundland have strong Irish accents as they were populated by Irish (mostly Wexford/Waterford). Newfoundland being pretty remote and sparsely populated they didn’t mix with other communities as much as in the US hence they retained the accent.
